Wengen: better in late November or mid December?

Short summary – read this first

Marcio is planning a trip to the Swiss Alps, specifically Wengen, and wants advice on whether it's better to visit at the end of November or mid-December, considering the weather and other factors. He should note that November is quieter but may have some hotel closures and limited cable car services, while mid-December is closer to the holiday season with increased activity.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider visiting in late November to save money, as prices rise closer to Christmas.
  • Be aware that many hotels and cable cars in Wengen may be closed in November but trains operate year-round.
  • Plan for quieter days and consider exploring lower elevation hiking trails since cable cars may be out for maintenance in that period.

Hi Marcio, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

There is no big difference really, as long as you understand “December” as meaning “before the Christmas period” (i.e. Before 20 Dec.). In November, high season prices do not apply so you might save money. On the other hand, many hotels ar closed precisely in November, as well as some cableways. Trains operate all year round, though.

I wish you a pleasant time in Wengen!

    Hi Marcio,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Wengen between November to mid-December is usually quiet. Most of the cable cars in the region will be out for maintenance. However as Snowman has mentioned, the trains are available and you can still plan day trips or hike some trails in the lower elevation.

Here is a short guide about what to to do and see at different season or time of the year in Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit

Hopefully it will give you some ideas how to plan your trip.

    Regards,

    Anna
