we are staying in wengen in May 6-10 this year.  We will have Jungfrau pass for May 7,8,9.

one of those days we want to go to Grindelwald.   I have read that at the time we are there, the cable car from Wengen to Mannlichen and then the gondola from Mannlichen to Grindelwald will be closed – so we can’t go that scenic route.    The other suggested route is via Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald -but this too will be closed.    So is our only option to get to Grindelwald via train from Lauterbrunnen?

Then – to get back to Wengen, We would like to do the Eiger Express from Grindelwald to Eiger Glacier Station (NOT to top of Jungfrau).  Then From Eiger station – can we walk down to Kleine Scheidegg & then take the Wengernalp Railway back to Wengen?

    Hi Nana,

    >>> the cable car from Wengen to Mannlichen and then the gondola from Mannlichen to Grindelwald will be closed – so we can’t go that scenic route.

Yes, that’s right the cable car between Wengen and Männlichen and the gondola between Grindelwald and Männlichen don’t reopen for the summer season until 25 May 2024.

    >>> The other suggested route is via Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald -but this too will be closed.

Yes, the railway from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg is closed for maintenance from 6-17 May 2024.

    >>> So is our only option to get to Grindelwald via train from Lauterbrunnen?

    Your options are

    • train Wengen-Lauterbrunnen-Zweilütschinen-Grindelwald
    • train Wengen-Kleine Scheidegg-Eigergletscher + gondola Eigergletscher-Grindelwald Terminal + train Grindelwald Terminal-Grindelwald (which you plan to do in reverse for your return trip)

From Eigergletscher station, you can walk down to Kleine Scheidegg (if the trail is open), or get the train. From there you can get the train back to Wengen.

So you have understood correctly what options are open to you for the dates you are in Wengen.

Have a great time, and I hope you have nice weather!

    Hi Nana

the trail from Eigergletcher station to KS is short (1 hr ). But it is quite steep and I think there is a good chance it will be impassable due to snow in mid May as it is fairly high as well (it is the end of the Eiger trail). Maybe open but I’d have a backup plan just in case. Perhaps a walk from KS to Wengenalp or through Lauterbrunnen valley between Lauterbrunnen and Steckelburg.

    Hi NanaTravels,

In addition to the helpful replies from Alpenrose and Mark, you can also take a look at the link below where we explain the operation dates, schedules and timetable for the cable car Wengen-Männlichen.  Just scroll to “Operation dates, schedules and timetable”

I too, suspect the trail from Eigergletcher station to Kleine Scheidegg will be still closed.  There is still quite a lot snow at the moment.  You can always check in with the tourist office when you arrive to confirm.

In case you needed any online purchase options for the Jungfrau Travel Pass, there are some listed here:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
