Advice/guidebook on Wetterhorn climb in June

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, Tray1, is planning to climb the Wetterhorn next June and is looking for advice on a good route, grade, and timings. They also want recommendations for a mountaineering guidebook for the Jungfrau area.

Key takeaways:
  • Plan your climb for late June or July to ensure better conditions for the route.
  • Consider using the detailed map from the Swiss Federal Office of Topography for technical trail information.
  • Kev Reynolds’ guidebooks are great for hiking, but may not cover technical climbing routes extensively.
  • Make sure you have the right gear, including rope, axe, and crampons, as this is a technical climb.
  • Hiring a local guide in Grindelwald could be beneficial if you're not experienced with such climbs.

Hi We want to climb the Wetterhorn next June. Can anyone suggest a good route up there and information on the grade/timings. Maybe also advise on which guidebook to get for mountaineering in the Jungfrau area.

    Thanks Tray1

Hi Tray1 – make it late June, or , better, July.

Can’t help with route suggestions, but here’s a good map:

    map.geo.admin.ch/?topic=swisstopo&lang=e n&bgLayer=ch.swisstopo .pixelkarte-farbe&layers=ch.swisst opo.swisstlm3d-wanderwege&zoom=6&E=26 49743.27&N=1166135.63

Usually that map shows technical trails in blue. Hmmn.

Kev Reynold’s books are classics and definitive.

    Search for them.

Hi– I’ve not done this mountain, but this link will provide some information to start, including guide books, although most are in German. Note that this is a technical climb that requires rope, axe and crampons, and the ability to use each. Depending on your level of expertise, you may wish to consider hiring a guide in Grindelwald.

BTW, Kev Reynolds’ guide books are terrific, but he is more oriented to hiking and doesn’t to my knowledge cover technical climbing routes. Concur with Slowpoke as to timing– the route may still be in winter mode in June.
