What to do in Jungfrau/Interlaken in April in bad weather?

    Hello folks,

This website has been critical in my trip planning, so I thought I’d ask for some further advice.

I am arriving in Geneva in a few days on Fri 4/26 and transitioning to Interlaken on Sun 4/28 and staying until Thurs 5/2. I know that folks warn me to not check the weather too far out as things change rapidly in the alps, but the weather is not looking too great in the days leading up to our trip, so I’m anticipating cold weather and grey skies. Maybe even snow or rain.

I was wondering if there were any recommendations for things to do in grey skies/rain/snow specifically for the Jungfrau / Berner Oberland area in this time of the year. I know it is a shoulder season so not everything is open, so I’d definitely like to know my options before arriving.

    We were originally planning for:

    • Harder Klum (which we will likely still be able to do via the funicular, but not the hike)
    • Jungfraujoch
    • Hike in Lauterbrunnen – Staubbach Waterfall & Trümmelbach Falls & Mürrenbachfall (will this area be hikeable even after a recent snow? It is snowing the week before our arrival)
    • Murren – Grutschalp hike (it looks like snow may not be melted by the time we get there, so we may have to count this one out)
    • Grindelwald & First
    • Perhaps exploring Lake Brienz-Iseltwald area if time allows

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Hi Connie,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

It snowed a few times this week so hiking in the mountains might be off the cards unless the path is groomed.  I think it is still possible to go up the Jungfraujoch with the cable car and cogwheel train: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/. The cable cars to Grindelwald First would still run too but do check the webcam and mountain transportation status on the website before you go: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/grindelwald-first/.  Mürren/ Grutschalp is also still accessible even if its snowing.

Lake cruises on Lake Brienz (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/boat-lake-brienz/) are usually doable if the forecast is scattered rains or showers. You can combine this with city excursions – maybe to Bern; Thun or Lucerne.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna
