Hello,  I will be spending 5 nights and 4 full days in both Wengen and Lucerne that last week of August and the first week of September.
I am looking for suggestions on what type of travel pass I should have to take best advantage of any discounts in both areas.
I will be flying into and out of Zurich.  Would the Swiss Travel Pass and the Berner Oberland pass be overkill to purchase both?
Looking to save where I can but don’t want to get caught paying full price for transportation around both areas. Please let me know
any thoughts or suggestions you may have.  Thank you for your time.  Have a good day.

Or would I be better off getting the Berner Oberland Pass and the Lucerne travel pass for (4) days each to cover the areas i will be in and then get the swiss travel pass flex for only three
days for when i have to travel from Zurich to Wengen and then Lucern to Zurich by train?   Sorry.  It is all confusing on the best package to look at. 🙂  thank you.

    Hello Floyd

    Welcome to MySwissAlps

Buying both Swiss Travel Pass and Berner Oberland Pass does look ‘overkill’.

Here is a radical suggestion for you to consider.

Get a 15-day Swiss Travel Pass covering the whole length of your visit to Switzerland.  Get a Jungfrau Travel Pass for the days you are in Wengen.

    While in Lucerne

Concentrate on the lake boats and those mountain lines which are FREE with the STP.  (Stanserhorn, Rigi, Klewenalp, Stockhutte and Stoos.)  If the weather is poor use the STP for longer distance trips to (say) Lugano, Geneva, or to Chur and Graubunden canton.

    While in Wengen

Provided the weather is good take advantage of the heavily discounted fare the JTP gives to go up to Jungfraujoch.  Go up the mountains which ARE FREE with the JTP.  Grindelwald-First, Mannlichen, Schynige Platte, Harder.  If the weather is poor use the STP for longer distance trips to (say) Bern, Saas Fee or Zermatt.

In any event, you are going to have to do quite a lot of thinking.

    Best wishes
    Roger

    Hello again Floyd

Here is your (less radical) suggestionBOP + LTP

I am assuming that your total trip length is eleven days.  On day one you go from Zurich Airport to Wengen via Bern.  On Day Six from Wengen to Lucerne.  On day eleven Lucerne to Zurich Airport.

(Note Half fare Card now costs 150 CHF.  On the figures shown below you will LOSE nine CHF if you buy an HFC.   But just one additional long distance journey made while you are staying in Lucerne (say to Geneva or Lugano) would turn a loss into a significant saving.)

Buy a six-day BOP for days one to six   350 CHF without HFC;  254 CHF with HFC: https://www.myswissalps.com/buy-berner-oberland-pass/

Buy a for-day LTP for days seven to ten. 265 CHF, no HFC discount: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/lucerne-travel-pass/

Day One Zurich Airport to Wengen

Buy point-to-point ticket Zurich Airport to BERN.   59 CHF, with HFC 29.50: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/ & https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/regular-ticket/

Use your Berner Oberland Pass for the Bern to Wengen segment of your journey.

Day Six Wengen to Lucerne.  Use your BOP.  Valid to Lucerne station – but no further.)

    Day Eleven

Buy a point-to-point ticket Lucerne to Zurich Airport, 31.00 CHF. with HFC 15.50.

Is your flight form Zurich in the late afternoon or evening?

If so, buy a five-day LTP, 290 CHF, and enjoy a morning excursion in the Lucerne area, and then travel to the airport at lunchtime or early afternoon.

The LTP is valid from Lucerne to the town called ZUG(!).  A point-to-point ticket Zug to Zurich Airport is 20.80, with an HFC 10.40.

I hope this all makes sense!

    Best wishes

    Roger
