Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a visit to Schynige Platte on May 25 and 26. They're looking for the opening date of the railway, which seems to be around late May, but have found inconsistent information. It's confirmed that this year it may open later than expected, on July 1.

Key takeaways:
  • Check local websites for the latest updates on Schynige Platte's opening date, as it can vary based on snow conditions.
  • Be aware that this year's opening may be later than usual due to maintenance or snow removal.
  • The Jungfrau Top of Europe website lists the opening date, so keep an eye on it for confirmation.

Happy new year everyone. Just a small question. I have been unsuccessfully trying to find the season opening date for Schynige Platte. I am wondering if anyone can point me to the best site to find this information. I have seen several references to it opening late May but nothing more specific. We will be in the area May 25 & May 26 2023.

The Schynige Platte railway can open at any time from late May onwards. The decision is made locally. It depends on what snow cover there has been over the winter and how long it takes to clear it with the snow clearing equipment that the railway wheels out at the end of each winter.

I have just investigated further and it appears the railway will open from 1 July 2023 this year.

Jungfrau Top of Europe website does indicate 1 Jul 2023 as 1960man mentioned – seems a very late start – maybe major maintenance??

Last year we went up on 27th May which was a day or so after opening and there was a complete lack of snow up top but there had been a warm late Spring.

Thanks Tim O and 1960man. This helps confirm my concerns. I will plan around this (and keep an eye out closer to the time just in case.

Hi Terrismith67, I’ve attached a pic showing the conditions on Schynige Platte when we visited last May. It was a beautiful day with stunning views and certainly one of the highlights of our trips to Switzerland.

It is indeed an unusually late start but that’s how it is.

I wonder how long it will be before global warming makes it openable all year round…
