Where to exchange CHF to USD in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is nearing the end of a beautiful trip to Switzerland and wants to convert their remaining francs to USD. They are asking whether to exchange their money in Switzerland or at home, where to find the best rates, and what commission might apply.

Key takeaways:
  • Convert your francs at a local bank for better rates compared to your home country.
  • Avoid exchanging money at the airport as they often have poor rates.
  • Consider using the SBB offices in larger train stations for currency exchange.
  • Buying Swiss chocolate or cheese is a fun way to spend your francs rather than exchanging them.

    Hi Impactedmind,

Usually banks give the best rate – whether the banks here have better rates than at your home I don’t know. I’d exchange it here I think. Just avoid the companies at the airport – they tend not to give good rates.

SBB offices also exchange money at many larger train stations which I’ve used before. Or just buy more Swiss chocolate to use up the last CHF. 😉

I like the chocolate suggestion 🙂 That way you don’t loose a percentage of your money and you’ll get something in return. Another suggestion is to hold on to the money for your next trip 😉
