Which route from Obersteinberg to Stechelberg?

Short summary – read this first

LeeAnn is planning a hiking trip to the Obersteinberg Hotel, taking a route from Stechelberg that includes breathtaking sights like the Sefinenfall Falls. She’s seeking advice on which return route—purple, red, or black—offers the most scenic views, as they will hike back down after spending a night at Obersteinberg.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose the purple route for a popular and scenic low route back to Stechelberg.
  • Use the Komoot app for detailed information on all hiking routes and to assess your physical limits.
  • If you have more time, consider the black route for potentially stunning views, even though it's longer.

We will be hiking to Obersteinberg Hotel taking the route from Stechelberg towards the Sefinenfall falls & past Tschingelhorn mountain inn. After spending the night at Obersteinberg, we will be hiking back down to Stechelberg. I know there are many options but I have tried to narrow it down to three. I have attached a picture outlining the routes as follows:

    1) Purple route: Popular “low route” from Obersteinberg via Wilde Egg down to Talbachfall to Schürboden to Trachsellauene. (approx. 3.8 miles)

    2) Red route: Obersteinberg to Wilde Egg to Holdrifall to Trachsellauene. (approx. 4.5 miles)

    3) Black route: Obersteinberg heading towards Oberhornsee and east towards Schmadrihutte and around to Schmadrifalls and on to Trachsellauene.(approx. 7 miles back). We will not be visiting Oberhornsee or the Schmadrihutte.

Can anyone please advise as to which route might be more scenic or “not to miss”? Obviously some are longer than others but that is not a consideration. Also, if you have suggestions for any other routes or any combination of these that’s great! Thanks so much.

    Hi Anna!

Thank you for the link. I had previously visited it and got quite a bit of good information from it. All of the discussion and additional links provided in this thread refer to the route we have decided to take on our way to Obersteinberg (via Sefinenfall falls & past Tschingelhorn mountain inn) as well as the “purple” route – one of the return routes I referred to in my thread. Fortunately, I have been able to find enough information on this route as it is the very popular “low” route that many people use going up to Obersteinberg although we are considering using it to return.

However, I am still unable to find any threads, reviews, etc on the “red” and “black” routes that I outlined which are passing the Talbachfalls, or Holdrifalls, or Schmadrihutte and around to Schmadrifalls. I was hoping I could find some information on these routes to compare to the purple route in order to make our decision on how to return to Stechelberg. Yet if I do not receive any comments from anyone who has hiked these routes, we’ll just wait and ask once we arrive. No worries:)

Thanks again for your reply and help!

    Hi Anna!

Wow! This is a fantastic site with very detailed and technical information. I’m not sure how I missed this but it has helped tremendously to see what we should or should not do in order to stay within our physical limits.

    Thank you once again,
