Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Link is planning a trip from Zurich to Liechtenstein and needs help finding a train route. They want to know how to get to Vaduz, the capital, and are a bit confused about the best way to travel there, especially regarding train and bus options.

Key takeaways:
  • Take a train from Zurich to Sargans, then switch to a bus to Vaduz for the best route.
  • If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the bus rides in Liechtenstein are free, which can save you money.

    Hi Link,

would you like to go to Vaduz? This is the capital city of Liechtenstein.

Search for Vaduz – Altenbach in the timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable), use the advanced timetable on the right side of the page. If you are not familiar with the timetable, I recommend reading the explanation on that page.

You take the train to Sargans, where you change to a bus and go to Vaduz. The whole route takes around 1-1,5 hours.

    I hope this helps,
    Ildiko

WOW. What a wonderful help you have been. I wasn’t searching correctly…couldn’t find a train to Vaduz because it’s a bus.

Thank you so very much, IIdiko.

    Correct!

There is one railway line running through Liechtenstein, owned by Austrian Federal Railways, with just one main (ish!) station in Liechtenstein territory – Schaan-Vaduz, so it is physically possible to travel to Liechtenstein by train, but it is not logical, especially if you are using a Swiss Travel Pass, as the Buchs SG – Schaan train is not Swiss, but the buses in Liechtenstein are valid free on STP.

There are buses from Buchs SG railway station as well as Sargans

Note that you can do a circular tour from Zurich, since SBB rearranged the service in Eastern Switzerland so there are direct trains Zurich – St Gallen – Rorschach – Buchs SG – Sargans , as well as the more direct line Zurich – Ziegelbrucke – Sargans

    Hello 1960man and thank you.

Sometimes I think maybe I should just hire a travel agent to arrange all of our exploring! We really want to explore on our own and not with a group tour’s timeline but it is challenging to figure it all out. You have been very helpful and I appreciate all you and the rest of the My Swiss Alps community! You are all amazing.

So… Zurich-Ziegelbrucke-Sargans via train and then bus into Vaduz, right? We could even take another route back to Zurich. I’m glad we don’t travel until June. I need all the planning time I can’t get!!!

    Hi Link,

We had 5 weeks travelling Switzerland from Australia in 2019. Agree, independent travel takes lots of research and planning, but it’s so worth it to have the flexibility to go where you want when you want. Below is the link to one of my trip reports that takes in Liechtenstein, though we went from Luzern, see Day 33.

Check out other trip reports in the Forum, they are an amazing source of information.

Happy planning, and have a great trip!

    Regards,

    Narelle

    Thanks, Narelle!

So maybe we aren’t crazy, after all! The trip reports are a great suggestion. The research and planning will be worth it!

    Correct

Planning will get easier when the 2022 timetable is published on the electronic Swiss National Timetable (Offizielles Kursbuch) , where you get a choice of formats:

    1) PDF type facsimiles of a ‘printed’ timetable

    2) a – b journey planner type result

    3) point to point ‘route table’ “(A route table is a timetable in the form of a table. On this page you can generate your own individual route table. The official route tables show all services provided by transport companies under concession.)”

    4) ‘station departure boards’

Sargans – Vaduz buses are variable between slower and faster routes, but look for any Vaduz bus at Sargans station on arrival. On the way back you can go from Vaduz to Buchs SG, then take the train from Buchs to Zurich via St Gallen and Winterthur. The latter is usually about 20 – 30 minutes longer than the Sargans route overall.

Sooo worth it Link! We live at sea level on the coast, so only see mountains when we travel. Switzerland was so beautiful I often couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing 😍
