Where to find free Wifi to use SBB app?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Jenloitz is preparing for a trip to Switzerland and is concerned about finding free WiFi. They don’t want to spend money on a rented hotspot, as their phone is locked and they will be using the Swiss Travel Pass to access the SBB app for train timetables.

Key takeaways:
  • Look for free WiFi at all gondola, cable car, and train stations, as well as at hotels.
  • You may need a SMS activation code to access WiFi on trains, so be aware of that.
  • Renting a WiFi hotspot is an option for locked phones if you change your mind about free options.

Is it hard to find free Wifi? I don’t want to spend the money to rent a hotspot and my phone is locked so I am unable to get a SIM card. I will be traveling with the swiss travel pass but will need wifi to be able to look up the timetables on the SBB app. Thanks!

    Hi Jenloitz,

You can rent a Wifi hotspot, that works for locked phones as well. Information about that, and about free Wifi at the train stations can be found here:

    Hi Jenloitz,

There was free wifi at all the gondola and cable car stations, as well as train staions. There was also on the trains, but there we needed to receive a sms with the activation code , which we never did. Also you should have free wifi at your hotel.
