WiFi on Swiss trains

Short summary – read this first

David Kudro from the United States is planning a 7-day trip to Switzerland from September 9-16, 2023. He wants to know if he can use the SBB FreeSurf app with his Verizon SIM card to access free Wi-Fi on trains while traveling. He seeks advice from those who have used the app during similar trips.

Key takeaways:
  • Make sure to install the SBB FreeSurf app and register once to use it.
  • Free Wi-Fi on trains is usually available on long-distance routes labeled with 'FS' in the timetable.
  • You can only connect for free if you have a SIM card from a participating provider, not all SIM cards work with the app.

I am from the United States and will be traveling for 7 days in Switzerland from September 9-16, 2023. I will have the International phone plan from Verizon Wireless. To save on data usage and get faster speeds I would like to use the SBB wifi app while we are traveling on the trains. My questions are ; Can I simply turn on my wifi and use the SBB free surf app by supplying my phone number when registering? Do I need a different sim card than the Verizon SIM card already in my phone? The SBB free surf app states my phone type is compatible but doesn’t address the compatibility with my Verizon Wireless sim card. I’m hoping for help those who have traveled from the US and used the SBB free surf app for help.

    Thank you

    Hello David,

Wifi is not available on all trains in Switzerland. As a general rule, it is available on long-distance trains (IC and IR). Key in your train route in the timetable line and trains marked with FS will have WiFi. https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

Passengers from abroad can surf the internet for free if they have a SIM card from a participating provider: Digitec Connect, Quickline, Salt, Swisscom, Sunrise.

    The steps are:

    • Install the SBB FreeSurf app.
    • Register (once only).
    • Trains with free internet are marked with FS (for FreeSurf) in the online timetable and in the SBB Mobile app.
    • Activate Bluetooth.
    • Open SBB FreeSurf.
    • Confirm that you wish to surf for free.
    • Start surfing.
