Zermatt – cosy restaurant recommendations

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a 7-night visit to Zermatt and is looking for restaurant recommendations and advice on getting to Findlerhof. They have reservations at a couple of places already, but want cozy dining options after long days, aiming for relaxed atmospheres rather than fine dining.

Key takeaways:
  • To reach Findlerhof, walking is the easiest option since it's located in Findeln with no road access.
  • Reservations are highly recommended for all restaurants, especially during busy times like lunch and weekends.
  • For a cozy atmosphere, consider trying Walliserkanne for local brasserie dining or Pizza Roma for casual meals.

Hello again all…We’ll be spending 7 nights in Zermatt soon and I’m hoping I can get some restaurant recommendations and advice.

    1) We have made a couple reservations at Restaurant Schaferstube and Findlerhof. We waited too long to reserve Chez Vrony but Findlerhof looks like a nice consolation prize. One question on Findlerhof…It seems a little difficult to get to. What is the easiest route from town? For reference, our hotel, the Hotel Butterfly is very close to the train station. We booked lunch so walking back would be an option if plausible.

2). We’ve been turned away from Le Chalet da Giuseppe for not having reservations previously, but I don’t see that they have a viable website. Do you have to call them to reserve a table?

    3) We like casual, cozy, rustic places. Fire places would be great. We don’t necessarily need fine dining or Michelin stars. Just a place to relax with a nice glass of wine and good meal after a long day. Any type of food, Swiss, American, Italians, French, German. We love it all. What are some other places you’d recommend?

    As always…Thank you!

You say you want cosy / rustic and don’t need fine dining but then list all the restaurants that I associate with ‘finer dining’ in Zermatt!

It depends on how busy the village is when you are visiting, but many of the ‘ordinary’ restaurants also benefit from a reservation, but not in the sense that they are ‘exclusive’ type places.

Our first port of call in Zermatt has always been the Walliserkanne in the main street. A great ‘local’ Brasserie type place.

Chez Vrony and Findlerhof are in Findeln, which has no roads so you have to walk or ski to the hamlet

    Hi Fballguy,

    1. As mentioned by 1960man, you can best reach the Findlerhof on foot. You can find the details on the website: http://www.findlerhof.ch/information

    2. During busy period such as lunchtime and weekends, it’s advisable to reserve a table at a restaurant in advance.

    3. Zermatt has a varied choice of restaurant options despite being a small and compact destination. Perhaps you can browse this link for suggestions. More info about Zermatt here: http://www.myswissalps.com/zermatt

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

I have enjoyed both the Schaferstube and the Findlerhof and hope you do too! If you want something very casual, the little Pizza Roma (just a bit further up the street from the Hotel Julen) is cozy. I returned there last summer and shared a wonderful pizza and salad with my travel companion. We had arrived late to Zermatt from a wonderful blue sky day in Chamonix, and were able to just pop in, but that might be more difficult during ski season. Also nearby is the Stockhorn – also very cozy. Highly recommended is the Spycher, but I have yet to try it myself. Would love to read a trip report or restaurant review when you return – I’m envious! Perhaps you could just have an pre-dinner drink at Chez Vrony, and then walk across to the Findlerhof? Another favorite of mine is the Zum See, but it is a bit of a hike.

The food at Pizza Roma looks delicious and we’ll definitely add that to the list of options. We’re big fans of Italy as well and I grew up between New Haven, CT (Pizza Capital of the US!) and NYC so pizza is second only to oxygen for me when it comes to life enabling sustenance. Pizza and wine? Even better! I was blown away by the look and especially the menu at Stockhorn and quickly made a reservation there. Thankfully, the could accommodate us. Excellent tips! I will post a trip report for sure. Thank you!

You’re most welcome – looking forward to hearing about your trip! (Also a New England native, but north of CT.)

My restaurant recommendation for Zermatt would be: Waliserstube is not so big, cosy and the food is very well varied. Chalet da Giuseppe is Italian and very good and the host is very hospitable. The Waliserkanne is very central, the food good and the restaurant cosy. Also recommended is the Ross-Stall with Swiss cuisine.

Reservations are highly recommended for all restaurants!

Have a great stay in Zermatt

I second the recommendation for Pizzeria Roma–the food is tasty and the ambience is definitely cozy! We also enjoyed La Taverne last July; it’s a quaint little place, located a pleasant stroll away from Kirchstrasse alongside the river. Delicious traditional Swiss/German food (rösti!) and more local than touristy. I just checked their website, though, and it appears that they are closed through the winter season this year, so if you are traveling in the next few months, they will not be open. 🙁
