Zurich airport-boat to Rapperswil: best day pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, WanderB, is planning a trip to Zurich and needs help figuring out the best day pass for transportation. They want to travel from Zurich airport to Zurich HB, enjoy a boat cruise to Rapperswil, and return by train, but are confused about which ZVV day pass covers all their routes. They seek advice on which pass to buy and whether upgrades are needed for the boat cruise.

Key takeaways:
  • The ZVV 9 o’clock day pass won't cover all the desired routes, especially if you want to reach Rapperswil by boat.
  • For all zones, including the boat trip, you will need a ZVV pass that covers all zones.
  • Upgrading your boat journey is possible, and you can purchase an upgrade ticket at the pier, making it flexible based on the weather.

    Hello MySwissAlps Forum Members,

Can you please help? It seems there’s at least 3 Day Pass options available for traveling in the Zurich area. I am specifically interested in purchasing a day pass that covers transportation for:

    a) Train from Zurich airport to Zurich HB

    b) Boat cruise from Zürich Bürkliplatz to Rapperswil

    c) Train from Rapperswil back to Zurich HB, with possible stop at Richterswil, to walk along the lake to Wädenswil before returning to Zurich HB by train

    My specific questions are:

    1. Would a ZVV 9 o’clock day pass cover all 3 routes listed above as items a, b & c? The ZVV website states the 9 O’Clock Day Pass includes all zones, but the 9 o’clock Pass zone map (http://www.zvv.ch/zvv-assets/abos-und-tickets/zonen/tarifzonen-agglo-zuerich.pdf ) excludes zone 180, which if I’m reading correctly, the “Entire Network” zone map (http://www.zvv.ch/zvv-assets/abos-und-tickets/zonen/2021-2501-tarifzonen.pdf ), I need a pass that includes zone 180.
    2. Does the more expensive ZVV 24 hour day pass include zone 180?
    3. With regard to the boat cruise from Zürich Bürkliplatz to Rapperswil, does either ZVV day pass include this? The zone maps seem to imply they do, but the ZVV website’s FAQs for boat trips (http://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/service/customer-service/faq/see.html ) lists the Zürich Bürkliplatz to Rapperswil longer boat trip as an exception.
    4. If the boat trip is not included with either ZVV day pass, would a SBB Saver Day Pass be a better option?
    5. Since all the train travel referenced is less than 1 hour, a 2nd class day pass should be good enough, except for if we want the better seating and views typical from the cruise boat’s 1st class upper deck. Would buying a 1st class day pass be better or is there a way to upgrade just the boat cruise?

It’s a bit confusing which Day Pass will work the best. Would appreciate any advice you can offer.

    Thank You!

    Hi WanderB,

    Thanks for sharing your plans.

    In answer to your questions:

    1. There are 2 types of ZVV 9’o clock passes. Niether would cover all your trips you list.

    2. Yes, you’d need a pass that covers all zones if you wish to travel to Rapperswil by boat.

3.The shorter boat trips, are covered with the ZVV 9’o clock Zurich pass. See attached coverage map.

    4. To include Rapperswil, you would need a ZVV pass for all zones. You’d have to compare pricing but I suspect your ZVV pass would be cheaper. You can read about the Saver Day Pass here: https://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass

    5. Yes, should you wish to upgrade your boat journey, you can buy the upgrade ticket at the pier. Otherwise, yes, 2nd class is perfectly OK for day’s plans.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Thank you, Yolanda!

Your response is very helpful. The ZVV pass for all zones appears to be less expensive than the Saver Day Pass. Also, the ZVV pass gives me the flexibility to buy less zones (or the 9 O’Clock pass) if the weather is not suitable for cruising the lake to Rapperswil. Thank you again!

    Kind Regards

    WanderB

    Hi WanderB,

Yes, that makes sense. Be a shame to be sat on a boat if the weather is unfavourable.

Rapperswil is very pretty location, I hope you make it there. Not quite the same but there is the train option to get there too.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
