    Hi Basils99,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! In most cases Lucerne is a better base as it’s near the Alps while Zurich isn’t. That’s probably the area you’d like to see, so you will save time by staying in Lucerne. But ultimately it depends on what your interests are. By the way, there is a direct train from Lucerne to Zurich airport and it only takes an hour, so unless your flight is very early, you can stay all nights in Lucerne and save more time by not switching hotels. On the first day you could explore Zurich before proceeding to Lucerne and put your luggage in lockers at the train station. This way you use your time efficiently.

When you say “Leaving 16 Jan early morning” what time is that and where are you going?

If an international flight 10:30am or earlier I would suggest you stay in Zurich the night before departure. But Lucerne is a much nicer place to visit.
