Zurich overnight vs early train from St Moritz

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is trying to decide whether to spend an extra night in Zurich before a flight or stay an additional night in St Moritz. They will be in St Moritz from June 24 to June 26 and want to know if it's better to stay there rather than packing for just one night in Zurich before their 1:20 PM flight on June 27. They seek advice on travel logistics and train connections.

Key takeaways:
  • It's easy to reach Zurich airport from either St Moritz or Pontresina, but consider an early departure to ensure ample time.
  • St Moritz has better connectivity, but both locations have trains to Zurich, so choose based on your preference.
  • Always check with your hostel about early morning exit options to avoid any last-minute issues.
  • Consider taking the 7:02 AM train from St Moritz for a timely arrival at Zurich Airport by 10:44 AM.
  • If you're wary about train connections, opt for routes that allow enough transfer time to stay stress-free.

    Greetings MySwissAlps Members,

Am in a dilemma as to whether to stay one night in Zurich before my flight or may I start my journey early morning from St Moritz/Pontresina on the day of my departure flight.

My flight departure time is 1:20pm on Jun 27 from Zurich airport to Toronto via London. I believe I would need to be at Zurich airport atleast by 11am for my departure flight.

Would you advise to spend one night in Zurichbefore my flight or staying in St Moritz area is fine. I will be staying in St Moritz area for atleast 2 nights (June 24-June 26). I was wondering if i can stay one more night in St Moritz rather than me packing and unpacking for just one night in Zurich.

Would staying in St Mortiz over Pontresina matter? I would be staying in Youth Hostel in either St Moritz or Pontresina. It seems St Moritz has better connectivity but Pontresina hostel is closer to the train station.

Do let me know if you have any questions.

Please let me know your suggestion. Thank you. Appreciate it.

It is quite easy to get to Zurich airport from St Moritz to Pontresina (by the way Pontresina has just as many trains as St Moritz.)

However you must decide how much time to allow at Zurich.

You could get to Zurich from either Pontresina or St Moritz in the morning with a very early start

Thanks for your reply. I guess iw ill stay 3rd night in St Mortiz/Pontresina then.

One schedule at SBB site was having only 2 mins to change trains at Samedan. Might want to avoid such a short time.

No, you won’t. 2 minutes is the designed connection between the trains at Samedan, as the trains are deliberately run into adjacent tracks.

There is a specific train operating / connection system in place at Samedan, which has been used for many years, and I have frequently watched and filmed it happening. If you depart from St Moritz station the train goes direct to Chur via a stop at Samedan. If you depart from Pontresina, a train from Pontresina to Scuol will take you the short hop to Samedan. At Samedan, the St Moritz – Chur express (having arrived earlier) will deliberately wait for the train from Pontresina to arrive, before departing for Chur

You would need to check if you can exit a youth hostel very early in the morning. Many years ago I planned to exit a French hostel for a 06.00 train but the hostel door was bolted and chained shut!

    Thank you for your response.

Am glad that you are so familar with these train connections.

It instills confidence that I should be able to make the connection.

Also, thanks for letting me know about the hostel being chained shut. I will inform the hostel staff of my intentions to leave early the next morning.

Yes, that’s the one I will most likely take or the earlier one to that.

Thank you for all your help on this topic. Appreciate it.

You can also depart St Moritz at 06.45 and go via the Engadin – Vereina Tunnel – Klosters – Landquart , this would get you to Zurich HB 30 minutes earlier.
