Ticket for train from Zurich to Como

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named HMMM is planning a trip from Zurich to Como and is unsure about the train connections and ticketing. They want to know if their Swiss Travel Pass covers the journey and if they need to make any reservations or pay extra for the Italian section of the trip. They are looking for clear advice to clear their confusion.

Key takeaways:
  • You need to buy a ticket for the Italian part of the journey since it’s not covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • You can purchase a passholder fare for the whole route, which is cheaper and includes a seat reservation.
  • At Zurich station, buy the Chiasso-Como ticket in advance if needed, but you might not have to switch trains depending on the connection.

Hi! We are traveling to Como via Zurich and have a couple of questions. The train table says it goes directly to Como San Giovanni, but someone told me that we would need to stop at Chiasso and switch to an Italian train. It is an EC train, does my swiss travel pass cover that? Or do we need to pay extra since it goes into Italy? Make reservations? Super confused. Thank you for clarifying!

Hello HMMM and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

To travel to Como from Zurich with the Swiss Travel Pass you will need to purchase the ticket plus seat reservations for the ITALIAN part of the journey, as the Swiss part is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. You don’t necessarily need to change trains, this depends on the connection, but you do need to buy a ticket for Italy, as it isn’t covered by your Swiss rail pass.

Hope this helps solving your confusion.

On the first link Steph provided note “An alternative to booking a ticket to the Swiss border station, is to book a ticket for the “passholder fare”. That’s a ticket for the entire route for people who own a rail pass for Switzerland or Italy. The ticket is cheaper than a regular ticket because the leg covered by the rail pass is free. An advantage of this fare is that it includes a seat reservationfor the entire route, not just to the border. Passholder fares are not always available, nor needed (because seat reservations are not required within Switzerland).”

You can still do this even though you are going the opposite direction. Just claim GA discount (for Swiss leg) which for trips to/from Italy is the equivalent of the Swiss Travel Pass.

    Hello HMMM,

Your trip is similar to mine from Bern to Colmar (France). At Zurich station ticketing counter, you may buy train ticket for Chiasso-Como sector in advance before you board the train at Zurich station. If your train heads directly into Italian side, you need not alight at Chiasso. Just show your Chiasso-Como ticket if approached by a train inspector. If someone has reserved your seat from Chiasso, it’s fine standing during the remaining short journey to Como.

    Best regards, May

Thank you! So, where would I book the passholder fare if available? RailEurope?

SBB. Use the SBB Timetable that Steph linked to earlier.
