I connected with My Swiss Alps because my friend and I tried to plan our adventures in Switzerland based on all the things we have heard and read recently. The internet has almost too much information to sort through so Annika helped us choose a trip that included two train days and then four days in Grindelwald as our base for the Jungfrau region.

We had certains things we wanted to do and others that were flexible. Annika read those requests and was able to craft a nine day trip around it. Our first two days were spent visiting another friend in Zurich which included a day trip to Lucerne and Mount Pilatus, and then it was off to St. Moritz after three trains. No problem. The countryside was beautiful and switching trains was not difficult.

The following day to Grindelwald was a six train day that Annika gave clear instructions on how to make each connection. This is what I practiced before leaving my home on the SBB website and app. I also watched My Swiss Alps videos to become an expert on using the train schedules. Well, we boarded the fourth train too early so we ended up going in the wrong direction! Got off at the first station we could then after a 50 minute delay we took a rerouted trip to the correct destination. Unfortunately that train was six minutes delayed (which is quite shocking but things happen.) The next two trains we had to run to make connections and my travel companion had heavy bags so luckily a stranger helped her with her bags. The final train from Interlaken to Grindelwald was held in the station because it was the last train of the day so the transportation company knew to do this or else they would have stranded a lot of people at the train station overnight. Lesson learned. Pay attention to the train number AND time.

Once we were in Grindelwald we needed flexibility. Switzerland can rain so I wanted to make sure I could hike when it was sunny and we had plans to paraglide and boat on Lake Brienz in a hot tub. Annika had never heard of the hot tub boat so she is continually adding to her knowledge of fun things to do in Switzerland. She did sketch out a plan for our hikes, a day at Piz Gloria, paragliding and hot tubbing. And, she included various restaurants which I did not consult until much later. I like to use my nose to guide me! The one we went to often ended up on the list. We love Barry’s!

My travel companion suggested we visit Jungfraujoch so we were able to add that to our itinerary as we were leaving to return to Zurich. I felt so confident using the time tables and made a plan to do that in the first half of the day and then travel back to Zurich in time for dinner. We opted not to stop in Bern as Annika suggested. Maybe next time.

Annika checked in on us throughout the journey and it was nice to hear from her. I also forgot to mention that she picked out nice hotels in St. Moritz and Grindelwald. She made our trip plan thoughtfully and we were able to do the things we wanted to do and even put in a few more! Thank you.

    Hi Carla,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to share your detailed trip report! Happy to hear Annika’s suggestions were helpful, and I will pass that on to her.

It sounds like you have been getting to know the Swiss train system quite well, including the rare delay 🙂
