Visit Liechtenstein from Zurich: should I buy my tickets in advance?

Short summary – read this first

Tanmay, a traveler, is arriving in Zurich on July 4th with his family and wants to visit Liechtenstein on July 5th. He is seeking advice on whether to book tickets in advance for their trip and how to make the journey efficiently.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited travel on Swiss public transport, which can include your trip to Liechtenstein.
  • The total travel time from Zurich to Vaduz is about one hour and forty minutes, connecting through Sargans.
  • Buses in Liechtenstein are well-served, and the Swiss Travel Pass covers all local bus services there.
  • While point-to-point tickets are available, a Swiss Travel Pass may offer more value if you plan to travel more during your stay.

    Hi Tanmay,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

If your plans are confirmed and you would like to have your tickets ready for when you arrive, of course you can purchase your tickets in advance. You could also wait till nearer the time too.

It maybe worth investing in a rail pass to cover this excursion, if you anticipate further travel around Switzerland and if you are planning to be in Switzerland for a few days.  For example the Swiss Travel Pass, this pass covers all of Switzerland. It would take you to Sargans actually covers some bus routes in Liechtenstein too.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

    Hello Tammy

I have used Swiss Travel Passes on buses in Liechtenstein on a number of occasions.  The Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/) is certainly valid on the whole of route 11 which goes Sargans (Switzerland)- Vaduz (Liechstensein)- Feldkirch (Austria) every 30 minutes.  At Sargans this route is timed  to connect with the InterCity trains from/to Zurich.  (I have made this connection on a number of occasions.) Total journey time Zurich to Vaduz is about one hour forty minutes.  If you do not invest in STPs through point-to-point tickets Zurich to Vaduz are available.

Seat reservation are possible on the Zurich-Sargans(-Chur) trains, but not mandatory.   Bus route 11 is an ordinary local bus so seat reservation is of course not possible.  Just in case you have Eurail or Interrail Passes, I should mention that those passes are NOT valid on the bus.

I should also mention that STPs are NOT valid on the Austrian trains which cross Liechtenstein.

    Kind regards
    Roger

    Hi Tanmay,

The Swiss Travel Pass is valid for travel to Vaduz (Liechtenstein). Vaduz is easily explored on foot.
If you are travelling outside of Zurich for just 1 day, perhaps you can consider buying a Saver Day Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/).

For getting around Zurich, buying the ZurichCard is a practical option or you can buy the ZVV pass: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zurich/#travel

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hello again Tanmay

    Buses in Leichtenstein

Clarifying what has been said in earlier replies, both the Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Day Saver Passes are valid on all bus services in Liechtenstein.  And on the route 11 to Feldkirch you can with your Swiss pass travel free to an attractive Austrian town!  But note that Swiss passes are not valid on the trains between Feldkirch and Buchs(SG).

I know from personal experience that the bus service in Liechtenstein is very good.  If you want to go to a mountain resort, catch the hourly route 21 bus from Vaduz to MALBUN.  The journey takes 25 minutes.

    Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/)

Note that the Swiss Travel Pass gives free travel on all Swiss public transport (buses, trams, trains and boats) except high mountain lines.  Whether it is worth your investing in a 4-day STP is going to depend on what other travelling within Switzerland you are planning apart from the trip to Liechtenstein.

However, one thing to note is that if you do invest in 4-day STPs you will not need to buy Zurich cards or ZVV tickets.

    Kind regards
    Roger
