Having researched this a bit more it looks like a saver day pass for the trip to and from Murren from Zurich should be cheaper but I am being offered prices of chf69 on 04/01/20 and chf129 on 11/01/20 which is effectively more expensive than the standard point to point ticket.i do t want to hire a car but for 4 adults what are any other options and why can’t I get the saver day pass cheaper when booking so far ahead?

The price just went up. I’m seeing CHF88 for SDP 4/1 now. Same for 1st or 2nd Class. All those skiers must be snapping them up and driving up the price. Prices are probably always higher on weekends. They do sell out.

Interestingly the SDP is CHF52 for 10/1. Price not yet available for 11/1 on SBB app from where I’m looking.

I don’t understand how a ‘saver day’ pass can be chf 33 more than a point to point?

Because with a Saver Day Pass you can travel all day on the trains and traverse the country from one side to the other. It is not actually intend to replace or better a p2p price. It’s more the luck of the draw if it does.

It’s currently CHF0.80 less than p2p. 😉

Now seeing SDP on 11 Jan as CHF70 whereas 10 Jan still at best price of CHF52. Looks like they definitely bump up the prices for weekend travel. It’s all marketing.
