Zurich to Salzburg with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is heading from Zurich to Salzburg in October and wants to know how their Swiss Travel Pass works once they leave Switzerland. They are curious about train changes, tickets, and seat reservations needed for their trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Your Swiss Travel Pass covers travel to the Austrian border, usually Buchs SG, after which you'll need to buy a separate ticket to Salzburg.
  • Check train schedules on the SBB timetable for your options between Zurich and Salzburg.
  • Consider purchasing advance tickets from OEBB for potentially cheaper fares instead of using your Swiss Travel Pass.

    Good morning,

We are travelling from Zurich to Salzburg in October. We have purchased the Swiss rail pass . How will this work once we leave Switzerland. Will we need to change trains and purchase another ticket into Salzburg? Where would that be ?

Also do we need to reserve seats ?

    Many thanks

Hi Wads and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Your Swiss Travel Pass would cover you to the Austrain border. in your case, from Zurich, this would be Buchs SG usually: https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass/ validity. You’ll need to buy a ticket from there on to Austraia. You can do so here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/austria.

You don’t usually change trains in Buchs though, it is just where you cross the border. You can find trains schedules from Zurich to Salzurg on the SBB timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

You would show your Swiss Travel Pass when asked, when you are in Switzerland and the Austrain ticket should be shown once you cross the border. You may change trains in Buchs as I mention or you may not. The timetable will tell you your options and where any train trains are needed.

We’re travelling by train from Zurich to Salzburg next month. Following the advice of the man in seat 61, instead of using up a day of our Swiss Travel Passes, I bought cheap advance purchase tickets from OEBB for the Rail-jet all the way from Zurich to Salzburg.

Can you just get the Austrian leg through them ? We’re ok using our Swiss pass as it’s our last day. But I was looking for the price from Buchs SG and it’s still almost another $300 😶 Do you mind me asking what you payed ? Also did you get direct ? We’re travelling on a Sunday, doesn’t appear to be many options where I’ve looked . I’m a bit confused 🤷‍♀️

I only paid about 20€ each, plus a bit more for reserved seats. The tickets actually cover Thun to Salzburg as that’s where we’re staying the night before. They’re the super cheap advance purchase fares, but I did buy them quite a while ago.

Are you looking on the OEBB (Austrian) site?

Actually, we paid 39 € each, but that’s still cheap.
