Zurich-Wengen 6 nights: best pass and when to buy?

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a trip from Zurich to Wengen for six nights starting on July 2nd. They want to explore the area and need advice on which train tickets or passes to buy, specifically regarding the Half Fare Travel Card and the Berner Oberland Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass to cover travel in the Wengen area.
  • Purchase regular tickets for flexibility on the Zurich to Wengen leg, which allows you to adjust plans if needed.
  • The Swiss Half Fare Card can be bought online and will help reduce costs on various journeys.
  • Check coverage maps and possibly use a downloadable spreadsheet to determine the best rail pass for your activities.

Hi, My wife and I are getting the train on 2nd July from Zurich to Wengen, where we are staying for six nights, and then taking the return train back to Zurich Airport. Whilst based in Wengen, we obviously want to explore the immediate area, so apart from any highlights we need to consider, I am still not clear on which rail tickets/passes I need to buy in advance. Do I for example buy rail tickets in advance for the Zurich/Wengen leg, using a pre bought Half Fare Travel Card, and also buy the Berner Oberland Pass (BOP) for 6-days to also offset some of the cost on this leg, although this would not cover us for the return journey (although I guess the Half Fare Card would help) unless we buy the more expensive 8-Day BOP? Any advice on what best to do, would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks …

    Hi JulesB,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your July plans.

Depending on your travel plans whilst based in Wengen, it could be that the Berner Oberland Pass or even the Jungfrau Travel Pass would be good fits. You’d need to have a look at your overall plans and see which would work better.  Perhaps take a look at the coverage maps for both, you’ll find them in the below links:

Whether to purchase your Zurich-Wengen tickets, yes you can, that way you will be all set when you arrive. I’d probably recommend you run with regular tickets, that way you have flexibility to take any train in case your flight in is delayed.  Online purchase options for regular point-to-point tickets can be found here:

The Swiss Half Fare Card can be purchased online too, some options are listed here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/

Note, if with running with either of the above-mentioned passes, if you intend to have the pass also start on the same day as traveling to Wengen, you’d only need a ticket to Zurich to Bern or Lucerne (depending which route you take) with the Berner Oberland Pass or Zurich to Interlaken with the Jungfrau Travel Pass.

To be extra sure of which pass(es) would work best for you. Many members of our forum like to carry out some maths via our “How to choose a rail pass” link. There is also a downloadable spreadsheet you can use, thereon, based on daily activities, the best rail pass is displayed. Here’s the link:

I hope this gets you started, do feel free to reach with any questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
