    Hi Flurvin,

When you say “a major airport” do you mean one near wherever you end up? Or did you have one in mind? In Switzerland or elsewhere, say Italy?

    Hi Flurvin,

If you plan on incorporating scenic train trips into your itinerary, your overnight stops should be chosen with those routes and travel times in mind. There is a map of the panoramic routes to help with your planning: it is attached to the map showing where the Swiss Travel Pass is valid, and you can download it from the following page:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity

Approximate travel times for the scenic routes (one way) are as follows:

    • Glacier Express from Zermatt to St Moritz: 8 hours
    • Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano: 4.25 hours
    • Golden Pass line (full) from Luzern to Montreux: 5 hours
    • Golden Pass Line (part) from Luzern to Interlaken Ost: almost 2 hours
    • Golden Pass line (part) from Interlaken Ost to Montreux: 3 hours
    • Gotthard Panorama Express (boat and train) from Luzern to Lugano: 5.5 hours
    • Palm Express (PostBus) from Lugano to St Moritz: almost 4 hours
    • Voralpen-Express from Luzern to St. Gallen: 2.25 hours
    • RegioExpress Lötschberger (full) from Bern to Brig: 1.75 hours
    • RegioExpress Lötschberger (part) from Spiez to Brig: Just over 1 hour
    • Centovalli Railway from Locarno to Domodossola: 1.75 hours

If you want to calculate travel time for short sectors along these routes, you can use the Swiss Timetable:

So your choices are Zurich, Geneva or Milan I guess. Bear that in mind when including any of the scenic train routes in your itinerary.

You might consider Zurich to Chur, Chur to Lugano (Bernina Express), Lugano to Lucerne (Gotthard Panorama Express), Lucerne to Montreux (Golden Pass Line). You would see a fair bit of the country and end up within easy reach of Geneva Airport.

There are an infinite number of permutations depending on how long you want to spend in trains versus how long you want to sit on a mountain gazing at the alps.

Use the Swiss Train Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. If you haven’t used it before it will pay to read the instructions on that page before delving into the timetable.

And work your way through “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass).

Is it possible to do Zermatt to St Moritz glacier Express then St Moritz to Lugano Bernina express? Over two days!

looking at travelling Zurich to Zermatt on the Monday Zermatt to St Moritz Tuesday St Moritz to Lugano Wednesday then heading into Italy and fly out of Milan?

That will work just fine. You’ve got the hang of it now. 🤓

Look for GEX and BEX on the railway timetable. You will need reservations for both trips.

The Glacier Express follows the route Zermatt to St Moritz via Andermatt and Chur.

The BEX timetables are here http://www.rhb.ch/en/panorami c-trains/bernina-express#info

Forgot to mention the Bernina Express connection from Tirano to Lugano is a bus. It requires reservation as well.

Apart from that you can of course follow both the GEX and BEX routes on regular trains. You just miss out on the panoramic windows and commentary and lunch service on the GEX.

Oh and as 1960man mentioned on this thread http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/04-days-lucerne-trip-itenary-advice – don’t expect to see any glaciers on the GEX.
