Hi, Malaysian currently planning my year end trip; Winter in Swiss..weehooo! 🙂

My trip will start on 15 Dec from Kuala Lumpur to Rome. Planning to spend a week in Italy and depart for Swiss via train from Tirano.

My trip will end in Zurich for flight out on evening of 29 Dec.

Been reading blogs to find best ideas and plans how to spend my days in Swiss.

I have been in Zurich – Bern – Interlaken 8 years ago, awesome trip that was… hence why I’m coming back but this time taking the train from Italy up to Zurich.

    Based from what I have read, my route will be best a follows;
    1. Milan to Tirano (22 or 23 Dec)
    2. St Moritz
    3. Chur
    4. Zermat
    5. Interlaken
    6. Bern or Lucern
    7. Zurich (flying out 29 Dec)

    Seeking the best idea on;
    1. Rail pass
    2. Best night stop for lay over

    Many thanks!
    – wana

Hello Wana and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Nice to hear you’re coming back to Switzerland; that’s the country’s name, I am Swiss, it’s the nationality. 😉

That’s always the nicest, to hear of returning travellers!!!

I believe as you are planning of covering quite some destinations the Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card are the two rail passes to focus on, however, to compare them in detail you first need a clearly mapped out itinerary.

Once you have your itinerary you can use the spreadsheet in below link for detailed comparison:

I personally would consider staying in St. Moritz, Zermatt, the Bernese Oberland around and Lucerne, as they are the more scenic places to stay. However you don’t say how many bases you plan to have, as this could make a difference.

You will find accommodation recommendation in all links above.

Are you looking at the scenic trains for your route. I believe you might.

Hope this provides some input to set up your itinerary. Use the timetable to calculate traveling times and connections:

Happy planning and get back to us anytime for further input.

    Hi Steph,

Planning not to miss both Bernina Express and the Glacier Express.

Thus my train route from Italy will be asf:

Tirano –> St Moritz –> Chur : Bernina Express

Chur —> Zermat : Glacier Express

    Correct right?

Unfortunately the timetable /train schedule will only available 60 days before the travelling dates 🙂

Winter will be less train available compare to other season i recon.

    Hello Wana,

Yes, you’re absolutely correct. Find input about the scenic trains you mention in the different tabs of the links provided in my first post.

Are you planning of purchasing any rail pass? Might make sense with your itinerary.

Get back to us for any further input.

    Best,
    Steph
