We will be travelling by rail through Switzerland in April/May this year. I would like some suggestions regarding our leg from St Moritz. Our current itinerary is covering Montreux, Grindelwald and Zermatt and the Glacier Express to St Moritz and leaving St Moritz on May 10 on the Bernina Express, using our STP to Tirano and on to Lugano for 3 nights. and then train to Zurich. Given the situation with the virus in northern Italy we are wondering if we didn’t take this leg into northern Italy what other suggestions to people have for the leg from St Moritz to Zurich using our STPs. We are a group of 4 adults who do like to experience the natural environment, small villages and towns, although we do have time in cities eg Frankfurt, Munich, Montreux, Zurich.

I would appreciate the thoughts of people who have travelled in this area.

Hello Rob,

There is a bus which runs once a day from St Moritz to Lugano. It’s called the Palm Express – the B631. It departs St Moritz at 10:25am and take 4 hours. Pretty scenic route.

If you just want to head up to Zurich take the regular trains via Zernez and Klosters Platz to Landquart and then on to Zurich. The Appenzell region is rather beautiful.

Hi Robbaker,

I understand that you’re considering alternatives. However, it’s too early to tell if it’s actually necessary to avoid that area two months from now. At the moment it’s certainly not necessary to avoid Lugano, and the bus trip to get there via Italy would be fine too as there are no travel bans there: it’s 100 km away from the quarantined towns.
