Hello,

Two of us are flying into Zurich Airport on Thursday 16th September. We are then going to take the train to Berne. We are going to spend 5 nights in Berne and then return to Zurich airport to fly home. On one of our days in Berne, we intend to take the train to Jungfraujoch.

What ticket option will give us the best value?

Thanks and regards,

Hello Digger and welcome to the forum. Which ticket or rail pass is best for you, depends on several factors. You don't mention any other travel plans during your stay in Berne. If the trips from Zurich to Bern and back, and from Berne to the Jungfraujoch and back, are the only ones you'll be making, the costs are as follows (per person and in 2nd class):

Zurich Airport - Berne return: CHF 102.00
Berne - Interlaken Ost return: CHF 52.00
Interlaken Ost - Jungfraujoch return: CHF 181.80

Total: CHF 335.80

This means that you're best off with a Swiss Half Fare Card, which costs CHF 99.00 and allows a 50% discount on almost all trips you'll be making during your stay. The total costs in this case would be CHF 99.00 + CHF 167.90 = CHF 266.90. Only if you plan other long journeys from Berne, another pass such as the Swiss Saver Pass may become cost effective.

Calculations can be made by following the instructions in our rail FAQ. I hope this gets you started!

Annika,

Thank you very much.

The trips from Zurich to Berne and back, and from Berne to the Jungfraujoch and back, are the only ones that we are intending to make. We intend to spend the rest of the time in Berne and just use the tram and bus services to get about when required.
Does the Swiss Half Fare Card cover these?

Hello Digger! Yes, the Swiss Half Fare Card offers reduced prices for urban transport in Berne as well. The area and cities covered by the pass can be reviewed by clicking the link 'Overview of the network on which the Swiss Half Fare Card is valid' at the Swiss Half Fare Card page.
