Planning to visit Switzerland for 6-8 days in the first half of August 2016. Arrival in Zurich or Basel by plane and then travel to St. Moritz by train and spend entire vacation there (4- 7 days).

1. Please let us know (2 people travelling) what pass (transfer pass?) is best for us and for how much?

2. Also, let us know best value 3 star hotels in St. Moritz or St. Moritz Bad and their rates for that period (we have in mind Laudinella and Nolda hotels but open to other suggestions). If you consider half-board rates a better value pleas let us know. Prefer room with balcony and lake or river view.

Thanks.

Hi miltiades, thanks for joining us!

1. Which pass is best strongly depends on all details your plans, e.g. the exact duration of your stay (6 or 8 days?), the type and amount of trips you plan to make from St. Moritz, whether or not you prefer ticketless traveling, what your exit town/airport will be (again Zurich or Basel?) and so on. A detailed comparison allowing you to find out which pass suits your itinerary can be made according to these guidelines. Assuming you need to get back to Zurich or Basel after your stay in St. Moritz, a Swiss Transfer Ticket Combi might be worth looking into. If you expect to make quite some long train trips, an 8 day Swiss Travel Pass would be a convenient option.

2. The St. Moritz hotels we personally recommend are listed at www.myswissalps.com/st moritz/hotels. If you're not able to find anything that fits your needs there, please feel welcome to post to our accommodation forum.

Thanks for the prompt reply. To simplify matters please let me know the cost of the cheapest roundtrip train ticket between Zurich airport and St. Moritz for 2 adults between 31 July and 5 August. Morning departure from Zurich around 8am and afternoon departure from St. Moritz around 3pm.

Thanks

Hello Iltos,

A regular round trip ticket costs CHF 158. So if you just need a ticket to and from St. Moritz you'd better buy the Swiss Transfer Ticket for CHF 141: to do so, visit www.swissrailways.com/ en. After filling out your address, they will show the delivery options. Pick "Online Ticket" from the bottom of the list. They will e-mail the pass within a few business days (no delivery fees), so you can print it at home.

Where are you from if I may ask? Your account does not have a country selected. If you're from the UK you should not use the above website, but www.swisstravelsystem. co.uk. Apart from that it works the same way.

A Supersaver ticket might be even cheaper, if available, but I don't recommend that as it is valid for fixed departure times only. If you miss that train you'll loose the ticket. The Swiss Transfer Ticket and regular return tickets are valid for all trains during the day of validity.

You'll get free mountain excursions if you book an hotel in St. Moritz, please see the hotel page Annika mentioned.

Thanks again. Country of residence is Cyprus. We will be arriving from Cyprus at the Zurich International Airport and proceed to the train for St. Moritz where we will stay for the duration of our vacation. We will then take the train back to the Zurich Airport for the return flight to Cyprus on the same day (night departure). I take it that the prices you quote are per person, right?

You're welcome! Yes, prices are per person. If you only be taking local trips the Swiss Transfer Ticket and the free excursions will work fine for you. To explore a wider region, the Swiss Transfer Ticket Combi is the better choice. The Combi can't be printed at home yet by the way.
