We will be going to Switzerland arriving Zurich June 21, going to Lucerne for 2 nights and then Wengen until July 1 with departure from Zurich. We would like to do the Mt. Pilatus trip while in Lucerne taking the boat, then the cog railway, the cable car and bus back to Lucerne. We had planned to get a half fare card, and our hotel in Wengen includes the Junfrau Pass as part of the hotel package. I see that there is a 2 for 1 sale on the William Tell pass. Would it be cost effective for us to purchase that in addition to the half fare card or would we get half off the Mt. Pilatus trip anyway with the half fare card? The Tell Pass would free us up to do other lake cruises, etc. on our two days in Lucerne if we wished. Or would we be better off not purchasing the half fare card and just use the Tell Pass and the Jungfrau Pass? We might want to take some day trips to Bern, etc. from Wengen in case of inclement weather, and the half fare card would come in handy for that. Thanks for any feedback possible.

Hi cooper! If you possess a Swiss Half Fare Card, I don't think it's economical to buy a William Tell Pass on top of that, unless you want to travel very intensively in the Lucerne region during your stay there. The Swiss Half Fare Card offers a 50% discount on the Mt. Pilatus, Rigi, boat rides over lake Lucerne, and so on. A link showing the exact overview of validity can be found at the Swiss Half Fare Card page. If you wish, you can calculate the exact fares to find out if the William Tell Pass offer is cost effective.

If you want to be able to get to other parts of the country as well (e.g. a day trip to Bern or other trips outside of the immediate Lucerne and Jungfrau region), a Swiss Half Fare Card is better than the combination of Tell Pass + Jungfrau Railways pass, as this would narrow down your choices. Personally I'd prefer to be able to explore other areas too, especially if weather is bad.
