Hi all,

I am visiting Switzerland in mid April and my primary goal is to go up the mountains to enjoy view and snow. I am going to cover Mount Titlis, Jungfraujoch, Glacier 3000, Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn. I will have a Swiss Travel Pass during the trip. My questions to forum are:

1. Will I be able to buy tickets for the above mentioned 5 excursions on the day when I want to go from the stations (not online)? I don’t want to buy online before hand so that I can check the weather right before I go.

2. How to check the weather on mountains and know if it is good for a trip?

3. What is the expected weather in mid April on mountains and in cities? Will there be snow?

4. Is there a list of all the mountain excursions and cable car rides that are completely free on Swiss Travel Pass? Can someone recommend a couple of good ones from this list?

With regards to your question.

1. Yes, you can buy the tickets locally upon arrival, that is not a problem.

You will find supportive information of most of your destinations on this page, incl. attractions, route, tickets, etc. Just search them using the search bar.

2. To check the weather forecast and get an overall idea of the weather in Switzerland go here:

3. It is hard to say up to which altitude to expect snow in April, as it can be a month of returning winter periods but also one of early spring. The above links should help you get an idea.

4. To see the validity of the Swiss Travel Pass use this link, incl. a very helpful map:

Make sure you read how to use it if you’re not familiar with it.

As you don’t say how long you will be in Switzerland and where you plan to be based it’s a little hard to give further recommendations where to go.

Thanks for your reply. I’ll check out the links you have posted. Below is the my itinerary for the trip.

I am going to be in Switzerland for 8 days. I am staying at the following cities in order Lucerne (2 days), Interlaken (3 days), Zermatt (1 day), Zurich (2 days).

Below is my understanding of how to get to each of the excursions that I am looking for:

1. Mount Titlis: Go to Engleberg by train which is covered by Swiss Travel Pass. I should be able to buy a ticket to Mount Titlis’ cable car from Engelberg station.

2. Jungfraujoch: Go to Grindelwald or Wengen by train which is covered by Swiss Travel Pass. I should be able to buy a ticket to Jungfraujoch train from Grindelwald or Wengen stations.

3. Glacier 3000: Go to Gstaad by train and then to Col du Pillon by bus which is covered by Swiss Travel Pass. Then I should be able to buy a ticket to Glacier 3000 cable car from Col du Pillon bus stop.

4. Gornergrat: I should be able to buy ticket to Gornergrat cogwheel from Zermatt train station.

5. Klein Matterhorn: I should be able to buy ticket to Klein Matterhorn cable car from Zermatt train station.

Is my understanding correct?

Yes, your understanding is 100% correct.

Should you nevertheless want to buy the tickets in advance you can do this online anytime, also short-term upon arrival to Switzerland.
