Suggested castle visits around Interlaken?

Short summary – read this first

Darrell is planning a trip to Interlaken and wants to know about the best castles to visit in the area. He’s particularly interested in favorites and suggestions, especially since there are five castles mentioned. This thread provides useful insights into his options and the logistics for visiting them.

Key takeaways:
  • Make sure to check the opening times of each castle, as some may have different schedules and some are closed on Mondays.
  • Using the Swiss Travel Pass is a great idea since it covers entry to multiple castles and includes museum access.
  • Consider visiting Oberhofen first for its morning opening, then take a boat to Spiez for the afternoon.
  • Thun Castle is the largest and requires more time, so plan accordingly.

    Hello Darrell

Will you be based in Interlaken? How much time do you have available to visit castles? They are certainly a good option if the weather is not suitable for mountain tops!

We have visited 4 castles in the area – not sure where you found a 5th?

I am attaching some word documents about Thun, Spiez, Oberhofen and Hunegg (Hilterfingen) Note that entry to all these is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass which doubles as a Museum Pass.

Thun is the biggest and will take most time. – it is open every day, all day. Some are closed on Mondays, some only open in the afternoons. Oberhofen opens at 11 a.m. so you could go there first, take a boat ride from right beside the castle across to Spiez for an afternoon visit. Oberhofen and Hunegg are quite cloae together on the bus route 21 between Interlaken and Thun. Hunegg is the smallest but often has special exhibitions.- 2 years ago there was an exhibition of cable cars in the grounds and several years ago we were highly entertained by an exhibition of ceramic chamber pots!

If you have children with you, you might find the document about knights interesting.

I have included the websites for the castles in the documents, unfortunately some are in German but you can get an idea from the pictures and perhaps use an online translation tool.

    Hope this helps.

    Maggie
