We fly out from Zurich Airport at 1:00 pm on a Monday. Will we have time to drive from Lauterbrunnen where we are staying overnight that last night in Switzerland? How long might we expect it to take to drive, return our car and get to the terminal in time?

    Hi Kathiefrome.

Welcome to MySwissAlps! Just the drive takes 2 hours or so. But that’s without any delays, which is unlikely on a weekday morning. So add at least 30 minutes extra, plus time to return your car, plus the number of hours to be there in advance (your airline knows that, probably 2 to 3 hours). I don’t think I would depart later than 7 am, probably even earlier.

    Hi Arno –

Considering the traffic around Zuerich City during morning rush hour, that is a very conservative number.

Luckily, according to my last rental return to the airport a few years ago, the rental returns are very close to the check in and departure area.

I’d check a map and with the rental agency to be sure they have not changed. Your rental company may not be the same as mine was.

I always stay my last day or two in Zuerich city, and return my rental there , a couple of days before I leave. So, I am not up to date on that. I am on the traffic, however. Fierce. Not as bad as Boston in the USA, but close.

    Hello.

What are you doing on the Sunday ? I ask this because I’m wondering if it might not be a bad idea to spend your last night in Zürich rather than Lauterbrunnen. I am thinking that the drive might be easier traffic-wise on a Sunday afternoon/evening than on a Monday morning. That’s if this would not mess up your plans for Sunday. This would also make your departure day much easier to navigate.

I don’t know where else you will already have visited, but a nice leisurely drive to Zurich from Lauterbrunnen, via Brienz, Sarnen, Lucerne, and Küssnacht (if you depart Lucerne on route 2 and drive via Meggen) will take you beside seven* Swiss lakes: the Brienzersee, Lungerersee, Sarnersee, Alpnachersee, Vierwaldstättersee, Zugersee, and Zürichsee. Depending on when you leave, you will have the time to get out when and where you want. If you are short on time don’t go via Meggen, just get on the A2 around Hergiswil and go straight around Lucerne. * I didn’t count the Rotsee.

If you rented your car in Zürich, then you should know how far it is from the agency to your terminal, and the frequency of shuttles between the two.
