HI we are a young family (son who is 2 and half years) and are planning to visit Switzerland in July. We will be flying from Liverpool or Manchester, UK. We have been to Interlaken and seen the surrounding places a few years ago but that was in the Winter.
We now want to visit some new places but also may be explore again some that we have seen as this time it is summer season.

We are keen to do the scenic railway and on route cover a few places and stay in self catering if possible due to the little one. I think we can only fly into Geneva.

So looking for your advice on a short trip of 4-5 nights including scenic railway. I was thinking Geneva to Zurich by scenic railway and then stop over in some places on the way to enjoy the beauty and culture. (not so much into water sports or museums, but want to explore the culture and cities)

    Want to get your advise.

Also is scenic railway separate to swiss pass? does it include return journey or one way?

    Thanks

Like the idea of staying in Montreux and then travelling from Montreux if possible to different places so we can make day trips which are not too taxing and yet enjoyable so we can see as much as possible. Are there any good self catering places in Montreux?
May be visit Zurich from Montreux ? would you recommend any other day trips from Montreux that are family friendly? and we also like to revisit places in Bernese oberland – preferably if they are on the scenic railway route.

    Hello seemakrishna,

From your question I understand you are going to use a Swiss Pass? In that case you can travel wherever you want and whenever you want.

A Swiss Pass is valid in scenic trains as well, but for most scenic trains reservations will be necessary and that will cost you a bit more. For questions like these you will probably find answers to your questions on the Railway FAQ or on the seat reservation page.

You are probably referring to the the Golden Pass Line between Montreux and Lucerne, from there you could end up in Zürich. With a valid Swiss Pass a return journey will be covered.

I’m pretty sure there are good self catering places in Montreux. Information can be found here and here.
There’s always the possibility look for information on the website of the Montreux Tourism Bureau, which will have tips for day trips as well.

    Ideas for day trips:
    – From Montreux to Zermatt (scroll to Zermatt)
    – city visit to Geneva. This page on public transportation between the airport and the city centre may be useful
    – Boat trip on the Lake of Geneva
    – From Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland you can choose from several day trips

This timetable can help you to plan your trips.

Have a very nice stay in Switzerland!
