First trip to Switzerland – Advice needed

We are from Sydney, Australia and have always wanted to visit Switzerland. We have set aside 4 days for this. We would appreciate some advice on itinerary, fares and any helpful tips about where to eat as we understand things are expensive in Switzerland. We propose flying into Zurich in early June (from Stockholm). We love beautiful natural scenery. Would it be fine to stay in Zurich for 1 night, and Lucerne 2/3 nights there before taking the train to Geneva to fly to Barcelona? We would like to take it easy and not rush around too much as we are in our early 60s.

Please advise if point to point tickets (cost of tickets from Zurich to Lurcerne and Lucerne to Geneva?) are better or a 4 day Swiss pass? Any suggestions and tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Welcome to MySwissAlps, Larissa!

Great that you get to visit Switzerland. Since you prefer natural scenery, I’d advise to travel onto Lucerne right away and not to spend a night in Zurich. Zurich-Lucerne is a short train ride, so you can easily get there on the day of your arrival. Tips for the Lucerne region can be found here. You may want to make a side trip to the Jungfrau region as well; see tips and information here.

Once you travel to Geneva, consider taking the beautiful scenic Golden Pass route.

A rail pass will be easier than buying point to point tickets. A 4 day Swiss Saver Pass would allow you to travel for free throughout the country without having to buy additional tickets (this is only required for mountain transportation). There are other passes too; here‘s how to decide which one is best for your specific itinerary.

Further tips on planning your itinerary can be found here. This page can help you to find out more about food and drinks.
