First of all, this website has been so extremely helpful in helping us plan our trip to switzerland this July. I think I’ve gotten a pretty good handle on which pass we want to use. our itinerary is as follows:
flying to zurich and taking train to spiez July 14
    spiez to zermatt july 21
    zermatt to disentis july 22
    disentis to samedan july 23
    samedan to zurich july 24

while in spiez for the week, we will likely take a few short day trips, to Bern, for example. We’ve decided to therefore purchase a 5-day 1st class swiss flexi saver pass since we will for sure be traveling by train that many days and figured we could take advantage of the 50% discount on the small day trips we take. Please tell me if this sounds like a reasonable plan.

Biggest question is, we will be splitting the glacier express trip into two parts. Will we have to pay the reservation fee twice in order to do this?
any feedback will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much in advance!
    Lesley & Ryan

additionally, how far in advance do you recommend reserving the glacier express seats on those dates?

Hi Lesley and Ryan, and welcome the the forum! I’m glad to hear it helped you plan your trip to Switzerland. Yes, the Swiss Saver Flexi Pass seems to be a very good option. I’m not sure what your country of residence is, but please see whether your can profit from the Rail Europe summer sales when ordering your pass online.

You can make your Glacier Express reservations by now, and it’s wise to do so as such trains can be pretty crowded in July! You should make separate seat reservations for both sections of the trips. You will pay per section and the fee depends on the length of your leg. You can best follow the Glacier Express reservation link at this page, under the header ‘How to purchase railway seat reservations’, or fill out your country of residence in the upper right corner of the page.
