Glacier Express, reservation insurance

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Daveyj booked a reservation on the Glacier Express but didn’t get the seats he wanted, leading him to buy insurance for potential changes. He’s confused about how the insurance works, especially since he was told he’d have to pay a $10 fee to cancel without a refund.

Key takeaways:
  • Reservations on the Glacier Express are non-refundable, and the insurance only covers medical cancellations.
  • Be prepared to pay a $10 administration fee if you choose to cancel your reservation, even if you won't receive a refund.
  • The insurance option during booking is about 3.5% of the ticket price and is managed by a different company, so check their terms carefully.

I booked a reservation on the Glacier Express, and didn’t get the seats I wanted, so I purchased the “insurance” just in case.

Then I found the seats I wanted and reserved them as well, thinking I could cancel the original reservation. Of course, now I know that all reservations are non-refundable. My question is, has anyone else purchased insurance on their glacier express ticket? I’m confused as to how it works. Will it help me get my reservation cost refunded?

Also, when I emailed to try and cancel, they said there would be a $10 charge. If I’m not getting a refund, why would I PAY $10 to allow them to sell the seat and make more money? It just doesn’t make sense to me.

    Hello Daveyj,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

As you correctly state, reservations on the Glacier Express are non-refundable. My understanding with the insurance is that you have the option to re-book a reservation without having to forfeit the entire original reservation price. The $10, I assume is an administration fee on their part.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

The insurance is only for medical issues. If you try to file a claim with them, they require a full medical form. The insurance is not sold by The glacier Express company directly.

    Hi Daveyj!

I’m afraid I don’t fully understand. If you’ve bought a medical insurance, I think your insurance company has no reason to cover the costs of your seat reservation change, because you probably can’t prove a medical necessity for this.

I’m not familiar with an insurance especially for Glacier Express reservations, sorry. Maybe we can be of better help if you explain where you’ve bought or found insurance for Glacier Express reservations/tickets?

When you purchase your tickets for Glacier Express, they give you an option of purchasing cancellation insurance. It is puchased through the Glacier Express website as one of the steps of your reservation, and costs about 3.5% of the ticket you are reserving.

What isn’t explained, is that it is only valid for medical cancellations, and it’s insurance provided by another company.

My issue is that I booked a reservation with “cancellation insurance”, then purchased a different reservation for different seats. Then when I reached out to cancel, they asked me to pay $10 to cancel the reservation, but then I get no money refunded? Why would I pay $10 for nothing?

    Hi Daveyj,

Thanks for your additional info. I did a dummy booking and found the insurance option. The terms and conditions you have to agree with list the circumstances in which costs can be reimbursed. They’re all medical: see #3 in the screenshot. Under #4 it’s stated that reimbursement excludes processing fees. I assume those are the $ 10 mentioned to you, but I’m not sure.

This is what I understand at this point. For further questions, you can best contact the Glacier Express website once more. You can e-mail or phone them. Contact info is provided at the bottom of their website.

I hope they’ll be able to adress your concerns.
