Hello, we will be traveling through Switzerland June 19 through 2 July. We will be spending 3 days in Zürich and then going to Lauterbrunnen for the next four nights. While there we will be taking day trips to other spots such as Jungfroujoch, Murren, Grindelwald and Oeschinensee.

From Lauterbrunnen we travel to Monthey to spend two nights at the White Pod resort. From there we will go to see Elton John at the Montreux Jazz Festival spending two nights in Montreux. After Montreux we head down to Bellizona for one night hoping to see the castles. And beyond that we will be in Italy. So we are looking at a total of 13 days traveling around Switzerland. My main question is which swiss rail pass should we purchase? Would the flex pass make the most sense? Is the first class worth the extra money?

And beyond that does this seem like a doable itinerary, and please send any other suggestions you may have.

    Thank you, Jonni

Hello Jonno and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

There is no easy answer to the “Which Pass?” question. Everyone has different plans.

Your clearly mapped out itinerary should provide you with the basis for deciding which pass (if any) suits.

Using your itinerary you need to do the sums based on the cost of all your planned trips on trains, boats, cable cars etc. You can find the fares for any trip using the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable). If you are not familiar with the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on that page.

When you go to buy a ticket the fare you see on the right hand side of the page will normally be the half-fare price. Double it to get full fare.

You should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math.

I personally don’t think a 1st Class Pass is worth the premium. Even if you have a 2nd Class Pass You can always upgrade to 1st on specific trips. See http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/2nd1stcl ass.

    Hi Jlyncol1,

A Swiss Travel Pass for 15 days may make the most sense, especially if you do travel somewhere each day (and you can use it for free museum entrances etc)) but doing the math as Rockoyster suggests will tell you for sure. Read more bout that pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass

The Swiss Travel Pass Flex isn’t often the most economical option (the 15 day STP is less than 50chf more than an 8 day STP Flex) for example.

Be sure to use the timetable link to check travel times between any towns and/or mountains etc to see how each day will look for you and if your plans are doable (to you).
