How to use the Swiss Travel Pass with the SBB app?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning an 8-day trip in Switzerland from March 8 to 16, focusing on extensive train travel using a Swiss Travel Pass. They are confused about how to book seats for the Belle Epoque and Glacier Express trains, as the SBB app doesn't seem to offer this option linked to their pass. They seek clarity on booking procedures and ticketing.

Key takeaways:
  • You can directly use your Swiss Travel Pass without needing the SBB app for travel.
  • Booking seats for scenic trains is a separate process; you don’t need to show your pass when reserving.
  • You can book seats at a ticket machine or get assistance at a ticket window for reservations.

I am going to be using an 8 day Swiss Rail Pass from March 8 through 16, doing extensive train travel each day. The SBB app has been extremely helpful for me figuring out my trips, and I know that for almost all trains all I need to do is show the conductor my pass. I am, however, a bit confused about how to book seats and/or pay the premium fees for some of the tourist trains, as the SBB app does not seem to offer the option to link my 8 day pass (perhaps I am wrong about this) to my account. In particular I plan to ride the Belle Epoque and part of the the Glacier Express (Chur to Zermatt). How do I book for these trains with my pass? Is it possible to use the ticket machine or these? Or get this from an agent at a ticket window?
