I would like to hike hut to hut, and stay overnight. Do you know of a very detailed map of the huts, how to reserve one, and if the hut would be only for 2 people, my husband and I? Thank you for this excellent forum.

Hi Theresaanne,

Nearly all the mountain huts in Switzerland belong to the Swiss Alpine Club, or SAC. Have a look at their website www.sac-cas.ch/en/ to find what and where the huts are. In Switzerland, the SAC huts tend to cater more for climbers or high tourers than in other countries. You can do hut to hut hikes, but you will need to plan carefully so that the route is within your capabilities.

The huts vary immensely in size and facilities too. Some huts can sleep over 100 people, others are more cosy and some are too small and remote to have a Warden. Most have dormitory style accomodation with a single room with long benches equipped with matresses and pillows. Some also have a couple of normal rooms with a couple of beds, but the Matrezenlager is the norm. There will be a kitchen run by the Warden and his wife, and a large common/dining room. All the food is delivered these days by helicopter, so variety is quite good, although vegetarian choices are limited and vegan would be challenging.

Booking is recommended, especially during the High Season. Phone ahead, or even book on the Internet if the hut is connected. Check the SAC website for hut particulars. English is spoken nearly everywhere so don't worry about language difficulties, just phone.

I hope this helps

Have Fun

Alan
