Before we begin – I know I know, “Don’t go to Switzerland in late November” everyone said. Everything will be closed everyone said.

But my wedding is in December, and Switzerland is where we got engaged, so I thought it’d be a bit special if we made a quick visit to Switzerland before our wedding. I’d love to get your opinion on some of the options we are considering.

Arrival: Nov 22 (Thurs) 9:40AM to ZRH

Departure: Nov 25 (Sun) 1:15PM from ZRH

But we are meeting up with someone on the night of the 24th (and staying in Zurich), so we really only have the night of 22nd and 23rd for our itinerary. (my spouse-to-be is not a fan of staying in cities, so we are excluding for the moment, unless you strongly disagree). Lucerne is also excluded for the moment as we’ve been there twice already 🙂

    For 2 nights/ 2.5ish days

    Option 1 – Lugano

My thoughts: Weather could be better, much quicker train ride from Zurich, say hello to tiny strip of Italy in Campione d’Italia, time permitting say hello to Lake Como (to my understanding, bus between Lugano and Menaggio is covered by the travel pass?)

    Option 2 – Grindelwald

My thoughts: we got engaged in Jungfraujoch (Cliché I know) so it would be especially special, town will be dead, we could be stuck there for 3 days w/ awful weather

    Option 3- Zermatt

My thoughts: it was one of early contenders as I saw a lot of people recommending Zermatt for November visit.

    Option 4 – St Moritz

My thoughts – one of my friend threw this out as an idea, but I need to do research on it.

Lastly – I think it would probably be ideal if we bought 3 day pass as our last day will involve traveling fro Glattpark to ZRH which seems to be in the same zone (aka cheap ticket).

Thanks so much for your input 🙂

Hi Samanthaa and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Weather is a tricky thing in late November. Any town/region could have sunny and pleasant but chilly weather and any could have rain/awful weather.

Lugano is going to be fairly mild on average and rain would be my concern there (but I do like the Ticino region a lot: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti cino

If it were me I’d probably head to Zermatt. They could start getting nice amounts in snow by then (fingers crossed) and could start getting lively with skiers. The two main mountain attractions are also quite nice and you get the check out the Matterhorn. Here are ideas of what to do in Zermatt: http://www.myswissalps.com/ze rmatt/activities

On the 24th you could also take the Glacier Express train there via Chur after your arrival on the 22nd.

You could consider still consider the 3 day Swiss Travel Pass for Nov. 22, 23 and 24 (you are indeed very close to the Zurich airport in Glattpark). http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass

A couple of Saver Day Passes could work as well if you buy far enough ahead of time, but they don’t give discounts on mountain trips like the Swiss Travel Pass does. http://www.myswissalps.com/on edaytravelpass/details

Thank you so much Lucas. Really appreciate it!

With regards to Glacier Express – it seems like their website says “There will be no Glacier Express trains running between 15.10. to 09.12.2018” ?

Or are you talking about just taking local trains through that route?

    Thank you 🙂

Oh, yes my apologies for the confusion, you can’t take the Glacier Express panoramic train on those dates; but you can take regional trains on the same route if you’d like to.

Another option to get back to Zurich from Zermatt would be to travel via Brig and Kandersteg on the Lötschberg train or, a longer day would be to travel via Montreux and Zweisimmen (the Golden Pass route: http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass) to Lucerne and on to Zurich.

Both routes are quite scenic and avoid taking long, dark (but faster) tunnels.
