I get that you don’t get a seat reservation when buying a train ticket but does that mean that you might actually end up NOT getting onboard a specific train? We need to be at the airport at a certain time for an international flight and am worried that if the train is full we would have to wait until the next train which could be too late…?

Hello Wenche fast and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

You will always get on the train. Whether you get a seat depends on how busy the train is. If you make sure you are waiting to board the train as soon as it arrives in Lucerne will mean the chances of not getting a seat are greatly diminished. Also best to pick a direct connection to the airport and avoid train change at Zurich HB.

In 56 years, I’ve never been unable to board a Swiss train because it was too full. It doesn’t really happen as the trains are frequent and Switzerland is a small country and cities are small.

Zurich itself is roughly 1/16th the size of London for example.

Furthermore, Luzern is a terminus station so just get on the train as soon as it is in the platform and there will almost certainly be plenty of seats available.
