Hello,

I have searched high and low to try to find an answer to my question. I would like to travel from Milan - Zermatt using the Swiss Transfer Card on Sept 4, 2013 for two adults on a day trip. Returning the same day back to Milan. I realize I have to take an Italian train from Milan to a city in Switzerland. Transfer to a Swiss train and continue to my final destination. According to the rules, "The Swiss Transfer Ticket provides round-trip travel from any Swiss airport or border town to a single Swiss destination for less money than point-to-point tickets." My question is, "What city(ies) are considered border cities closest to Milan?"

Can I go as far as Milan - Visp on an Italian train then Visp - Zermatt on a Swiss train using the Swiss Transfer Card? Visp seems rather far away from the border.

Thank You.

Hello Luis, welcome to MySwissAlps,

I assume you mean the Swiss Transfer Ticket? There also is a Swiss Card, but not a Swiss Transfer Card. You can download the network map from the Swiss Transfer Ticket page and see exactly where it's valid. The border town is Domodossola in Italy.

By the way, there is no need to switch trains just because you would have an Italian ticket for Milan to Domodossola and a Swiss Transfer Ticket for Domodossola - Zermatt. Just stay seated and only switch according to the timetable. As long as you have tickets for the whole route, all is fine.

I would advice not to purchase a Swiss Transfer Ticket though. It's more expensive than a regular point to point return ticket from Domodossola to Zermatt. You can find tickets from Milan to Zermatt here.

Enjoy your trip!

Thank you for the information. All in all, this trip to Zermatt seems like awfully long day. I am thinking perhaps a closer city nearby in Switzerland may fit the bill. -Luis R

You're welcome! You can consider a day trip to Lugano. It's very different from Zermatt (no snowcapped mountains), but it's a really nice lake side town and much closer to Milan. A regular return ticket would be sufficient.
