Swiss mountain tickets for one way or round trip?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland and wants to know if tickets for mountain excursions like Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch are one-way or return. They are calculating prices for individual tickets and need clarity on whether to include every leg of their journey in their plans.

Key takeaways:

    Hello,

When purchasing tickets for mountain excursions such as Schilthorn, Jungfraujoch, and First, and cable car transport between Grindelwald, Mannlichen, Wengen, & Murren, are the tickets purchased as single trip, or “one way” or is the return trip included?

We’re using the spreadsheet to calculate pricing for individual tickets and wondering if we need to allow for a ticket for every point to point destination?

    Thanks!

    Hi Are2!

You can buy both single journey as well as return tickets. If you buy online in advance, carefully check what’s offered and what you need for your travel plans. In many cases that will be a return ticket I assume, but you may have plans for which you need a single ticket only, e.g. if you continue your trip with a hike.

When it comes to calculating ticket prices (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), that too depends on your plans. If you aim to make a return trip, then include the return ticket price in the spreadsheet; if you need a single journey, then enter that amount only. You’ll find fares in the timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable), where you can choose whether you need a signle ticket or a return tickets, as well as on the websites of mountain transportation companies. We link to price overviews from each of our activity pages (e.g. under “More information” at the bottom of http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn/tickets). The difference between single tickets and return tickets is displayed in such overviews. And yes, I’m afraid you will have to include each and every trip for a solid outcome of your spreadsheet calculation. If that process is too complicated, or unrealistic since you don’t know yet what your plans are, an educated guess based on a rough list of plans is a good alternative ;-).

In any case, don’t buy any tickets yet until you know which rail pass you’ll be using. Only then you’ll know which additional tickets and discount percentages you’ll need.

    Thanks Annika,

Yes, that does answer my question.

We do have a tentative daily itinerary built and in some cases (not many) we may need a return ticket.

We’ll be based in Grindelwald and It seems that most of our daily adventures will be of the point to point variety, with some hiking in between.. ie. First to Bachalpsee, to Waldspitz, then on to Bort for the gondola ride back to Grindelwald.

I assume Schilthorn, Jungfraujoch, would require a return ticket? Along with First if we just planned to go up and back on our arrival day? Also, I rarely see anyone mention Pfingstegg from Grindelwald. Is there not enough compelling scenery? We thought it might be something fun to do on our arrival day.

    Hi Are2,

Yes, you’ll probably need return tickets for Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch, as there aren’t that many alternatives to get down from the top other than using the cable car/train :-). Do check from/to where you need tickets. Route options are explained at http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn/gettingthere and http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch/gettingther e.

Yes, Pfingstegg would be a nice trip indeed! Its view are directed a bit more towards the valley than to the mountains, which may explain why it’s not as popular as some of the other mountains. But I can definitely recommend it.
