We area group of 7 from USA traveling with a large group but are breaking off at the end of trip to explore more. We are excited but anxious since before the break a tour director takes care of everything so we must now be independent!

We are trying to decide if it’s smarter to buy a rail pass or individual tickets?

Our Itinerary is mid July, 3 nights in Lauterbrunnen, traveling from Bern to Lauterbrunnen, and then at the end of the 4 days traveling from Lauterbrunnen to Zurich/ Zurich Airport.

*One day We plan on taking train from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch.

*Another day we plan on taking tram to Murren and hike a bit then train from Gimmelwald back to Lauterbrunnen.

*We had hoped to take the ICE train to Zurich. Is that possible or only the IC? We were hoping to experience HighSpeed rail.

Question Are all of these covered under the rail pass? When I do the math on the webpages I get different answers as to if its worth it financially, so I am hoping someone here has a clearer answer.

    Thanks

Hello Cathy and Welcome to MySwissAlps

Relax, the Swiss rail network is easy peasy.

Picking a Pass for short duration stays is always problematic. The shorter the pass the higher the average per day price.

Conventional advice says you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math.

If I was you I’d take a good look at the Bernese-Oberland Pass or the Swiss Travel Pass. Have a look at the “Where it’s valid” tab on each.

Don’t get hung up on the ICE train – they don’t hit serious speeds in Switzerland.

From Lauterbrunnen a very nice circuit to do is to Grütschalp (cable car), Mürren (train), Gimmelwald (cable car), Stechelberg (cable car), Lauterbrunnen (bus). From Mürren you can easily visit Schiltorn and Allmendhubel if you have time. In between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen the bus stops at the Trummelbach Falls. Well worth a look. All these places are searcheable on the MySwissAlps website.

    Hi Kthispsrecco,

Rockoyster already provided you with the links for the probably best suitable rail passes for you.

Should you choose the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland, which might be the best choice as your itinerary is mainly in the Bernese Oberland area, then you would have to buy either a point-to-point ticket or a Saver Day Pass for the last journey to Zurich Airport.
