Discounts

  • The standard adult fare applies to all travelers aged 25 years and older.
  • A 30% discount applies if you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card at the time of traveling. Your Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card must be valid during the entire validity period of the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland. This discount also applies to Swiss Travel Pass Flex holders, but only if a travel day of the Swiss Travel Pass Flex is used on all days of the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland. That's why we don't recommend the combination of a Swiss Travel Pass Flex and a Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland.
  • The same 30% discount applies to children and youths from 16 up to and including 24 years old.
  • Children from 6 up to and including 15 years old can get a Berner Oberland Pass at a flat rate of CHF 30. That allows them to travel along for free with an adult with a Berner Oberland Pass. This even applies to routes where adults just get a discount (a few exceptions may apply). The adult does not need to be family. School and scout groups can't take advantage of the flat rate. You don't have to get the flat-rate children's pass if you already possess a Junior Travelcard, Children’s Co-travelcard or Swiss Family Card.
  • Children up to 5 travel along for free. They don't need a pass.
  • There are no reduced fares for seniors.

Berner Oberland Pass map 2024

How the map works

  • Free and discounted traveling is explained in the upper left corner of the map.
  • The Berner Oberland Pass includes all trains that operate on the indicated lines and that are listed in the timetables. The train type (InterCity, local, panoramic) and the operating company do not matter. Panoramic trains such as the GoldenPass are thus included.
  • Urban transport within Interlaken and Thun is free. Urban transport in the cities of Bern and Lucerne is not included. The bus from Bern Airport to Belp is free.

How does the Berner Oberland Pass work?

With a Berner Oberland Pass you can travel as much as you like and you do not need tickets most of the time. Just board with your pass and enjoy the ride. You’ll keep the pass on your phone.

How to start using your Berner Oberland Pass

The Berner Oberland Pass is ready to use once you’ve received it. Simply keep it on your phone.

  • You will receive a PDF file. This file has a QR code that train staff can scan from your smartphone.
  • I recommend printing one or more backup copies of the pass on A4 or letter-sized paper. Bring them with you while traveling, in case scanning from your phone doesn’t work well.
  • The pass is ready to use if it includes all information like the start date, passenger name, and birth date. Your name may be truncated if it’s too long to fit on the pass, but that’s no problem.

How the Berner Oberland Pass travel days work

The travel days are consecutive. If you don’t travel on such a day, it still counts as a travel day.

Seat reservations

You do not need seat reservations for 99% of all trains and buses in Switzerland. You can just board with your Berner Oberland Pass.

A few of the GoldenPass trains are an exception. If you need seat reservations, you need to arrange for them separately. Seat reservations are not included in the pass. Advance booking for a few popular excursions, such as the Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn, can be handy for busy days.

What to present to on-board staff

Once you’re on board, you will need to present your Berner Oberland Pass (and the discounted ticket if applicable) to the staff upon request. The ticket controller may want to check your passport as well, to make sure you’re the owner of the pass.

When do you need additional tickets?

There are two types of trips:

  1. Trips on routes that allow free traveling. You can just board any train, bus, boat, et cetera on such routes. You do not need a ticket.
  2. Trips on routes that allow discounted traveling. You need to arrange for a discounted ticket online, at the ticket office of staffed rail stations, or from a ticketing machine.

There are many cable cars that also allow free traveling. If you can’t scan your Berner Oberland Pass to enter the cableway or funicular, ask the personnel upon showing your pass. You’ll then get a free ticket to open the access gates.

When we use the Berner Oberland Pass ourselves

We use this pass when we stay in the Bernese Oberland for 10 days or less, and when we don’t have plans to explore other regions. We prefer it over the Jungfrau Travel Pass because it covers a much bigger area. That offers a lot of flexibility.

If we want to explore more of Switzerland, or if we stay for more than 10 days, we buy the Swiss Travel Pass.

Our personal tips: what not to miss with the Berner Oberland Pass

  • The amazing ride on the Schynige Platte cogwheel train is free.
  • The scenic ride to the top of the Brienzer Rothorn is included for free.
  • The Berner Oberland Pass includes discounts on “Bonus partners”: various attractions like castles, museums, and outdoor activities.
  • The Blausee near Kandersteg is one of the Bonus partners. It is a small ancient blue lake. The entrance fee is 50% discounted.

Berner Oberland Pass FAQ

  1. How do I know if the Berner Oberland Pass is my best option?

It likely suits your plans if you have planned a lot of traveling in the Bernese Oberland only. You’ll save money as point-to-point tickets are more expensive.

The pass also fits your needs if you prefer ticketless traveling. You don’t have to get tickets for all of the transportation that is covered for free.

The Berner Oberland Pass allows spontaneous trips at no extra cost. So if you want to be flexible, the Berner Oberland Pass is a good option.

  2. Is the Berner Oberland Pass the same as the Jungfrau Travel Pass?

No, the Jungfrau Travel Pass covers a much smaller portion of the Bernese Oberland: only the Jungfrau Region.

  3. Is the Berner Oberland Pass the same as the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland?

Yes, “Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland” is the old name of the same pass. This name was used until 2022.

  4. I don’t travel in-season, is there an alternative pass?

There is no similar pass outside of the validity season: early April to late December. The Swiss Travel Pass is usually the best alternative. You can search for the best pass here.

  5. When do I need to buy the Berner Oberland Pass?

You can basically buy it at any time, although some vendors may not offer it well outside of the pass season: early April to late December.

  6. Do I need a SwissPass account to use my Berner Oberland Pass?

No, you don’t have to add your Berner Oberland Pass to a SwissPass account or any other account. This is often not even possible.

Page author: ArnoI have visited Switzerland countless times since 1997. I've explored most of the country, but find myself staying in the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden most frequently. The alps and the rail network remain very impressive, even after all these years.
