There are two routes with different scenery and different modes of transport. Both take about 20 minutes. Route 1 is by cable car and train. Route 2 is by bus and cable car.
Route 1: Lauterbrunnen to Mürren via Grütschalp
- Duration: 21 minutes
- Minimum transfers: 1, in Grütschalp (minimum walking)
Route details
1. Travel to Lauterbrunnen as explained here.

2. As you come out of the rail station, cross the street to the valley station of the cable car to Grütschalp. Clear signs show the way from the train station to the cable car station. It’s so close that you can’t miss it.

3. Board the cable car to Grütschalp.

4. At Grütschalp, board the train that heads south to Mürren. It departs from the same building in which the cable car arrives. If you want, you can get off at the small mid-station of Winteregg, where you’ll find a restaurant and terrace with panoramic views.

5. Get off at the rail station called “Mürren BLM”. BLM stands for “Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen-Mürren”. It’s on the northern side of the village. Via the main street, walk to your destination, which could be your accommodation or the cableway to Birg and Schilthorn.

Operation dates and timetable
Operation dates:
- The cableway to Grütschalp and the train to Mürren operate during most of the year, except for maintenance breaks in spring and fall. In 2026, there will be a longer closure because of engineering works. Annika has listed the exact dates in our Schilthorn guide.
- During these breaks, you can use option 2 via Stechelberg instead.
Schedules:
- The cableway to Grütschalp departs twice per hour in the mornings and evenings, and 4 times per hour during the day.
- The connecting trains from Grütschalp to Mürren follow this same pattern.
How to find this route in the timetable:
- Enter “Lauterbrunnen” as your departure station and “Mürren BLM” as your arrival station.
- Alternatively, use the pdf schedules here.
You’ll encounter these names in the timetable:

Route 2: Lauterbrunnen to Mürren via Stechelberg

In both cases, you’ll end up at the cableway station at the southern end of the village, called “Mürren (Schilthornbahn)”. There, you can continue your journey to Birg and the Schilthorn, or enter Mürren.

How to continue after arrival in Mürren
Walk to your hotel, restaurant or next travel destination
You’ll either arrive by train in the north of Mürren (route 1), or by cable car in the south (route 2). There are no cars or buses in the village, so you’ll have to walk. The village is small though. Between both stations, it’s a pleasant 15-minute stroll along the scenic main street of Mürren.
If you’re carrying luggage, contact your hotel in advance. In many cases, the staff can pick you up.
How to continue your journey to Schilthorn
The mountain of Schilthorn above Mürren is absolutely worth a visit. You’ll need to board the cable car from the cable car station “Mürren (Schilthornbahn)” in the southern part of Mürren. This gets you to mid-station Birg, and then to Schilthorn.
If you arrive in Mürren from Stechelberg, you can immediately switch to the cable car to Birg and Schilthorn. If you entered the village by train from Grütschalp, you’ll first have to walk to the cable car station in about 15 minutes.
Which route is best?
Make a round trip if you can
Both routes are extremely scenic. If you visit Mürren and/or the Schilthorn, I recommend going up one way and down the other way. This way you’ll have a varied round trip.
The scenery on both routes
- Route 1: during the train trip between Grütschalp and Mürren, you’ll have views over the valley and the mountain tops at the southern end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The famous trio Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau can be seen too. I recommend sitting on the left side of the train for the best views.
- Route 2: the cable car ascent from Stechelberg to Mürren is spectacular. It’s a very steep ride along the high rock walls that rise up from the valley. You’ll look down on these slopes and several of the waterfalls for which the Lauterbrunnen Valley is famous.
Fear of heights?
If you’re not fond of steep cliffs and cableway rides, I advise traveling via Grütschalp (route 1). This journey too involves a cableway ride, but it’s way less steep than the one from Stechelberg (route 2).
How to combine a trip to Mürren with easy hikes
There are easy and very scenic hiking trails down in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and along the ridge parallel to the train from Grütschalp to Mürren. So you can do part of the trip to Mürren on foot:
- hike Grütschalp-Mürren (route 1)
- hike Lauterbrunnen-Stechelberg (route 2)
The best direction would be to walk from north to south: from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg in the valley, or from Grütschalp to Mürren on the mountain. This way you’ll face the imposing mountains at the southern end of the valley. But if the other direction happens to fit your plans better, that’s no problem. The walks will still be pleasant and scenic.
How to reach Mürren by car and where to park
You cannot drive to Mürren, and the village is car-free.
This is why you have to park your car in Lauterbrunnen or in Stechelberg. From there, continue by public transport explained above. Find more tips about parking in Annika’s Lauterbrunnen travel section.
