We’ll be coming from Colmar for a one night stay in Lucerne on Sept. 5th. We’ll be staying at Hotel des Alpes. Arriving by train in the morning – 0930 at the latest. A couple of things we’d like to do and wondering if it’s possible to do in one day. We would like to go to either Mt. Pilatus or Rigi and also have a boat ride on Lake Lucerne . I read that the part between Brunnen and Flüelen is the prettiest. Looking at the map, I guess Mt. Rigi would be the better option. Any opinions on this? Also looking at the travel passes and I’m confused. Is there one that would suit us for this one day adventure? Would the Tellpass be the way to go? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions !

It is difficult to help as you haven’t said where you are going next

What I would say is that with limited time it’s not necessarily a good idea to try and squeeze in mountain top trips. Any trip on and around Lake Luzern (correctly known as Vierwaldstättersee) you will be surrounded by hills and mountains in all directions

Also depending on your overall itinerary, you could consider the following plan:

On arrival at Basel from Colmar, go straight to Fluelen. For example:

depart Basel at 09.04 on IC667 Basel – Locarno

Change at Arth Goldau (arrive 10.51)

depart Arth Goldau 11.09 on IR2417 (which will come from Zurich)

    arrive Fluelen 11.31

Depart Fluelen 12.00 on paddle steamer (with restaurant )

    Arrive Luzern 14.47

    Hello Lori cooko39,

Nice to hear you’re stopping in Lucerne for a night.

Both Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi are easily do-able as a one day trip from Lucerne, and both include boat rides on the lake, so I’m sure you’ll be fine with either choice.
http://www.myswissalps.com/pi latus, I am personally a big fan of the Golden Roundtrip

To figure out detailed traveling times for either trip, use the timetable below:

I assume just for that one trip a regular ticket will be more convenient for you, to be sure compare the “price” tabs of above links with the price for the Tell Pass (below):

Hope this helps, we’re here for any further input needed.

    Best,
    Steph

Thank you 1960man. This vacation is mainly France – Eguisheim in Alsace for 6 nights, then 6 nights in Bonnieux in the Luberon. We decided that since Switzerland was so close, we would see if a one night stay on the way to the Luberon area was feasible. So once we leave Lucerne, we will be taking the train to Avignon to pick up our rental car and then drive to Bonnieux. I hope that we have a much longer visit to Switzerland in the future!!

Thank you Steph! I’m still doing my research and nothing has to be booked in advance, so we still have some time to make plans. I wish we had more than one night in Switzerland, but that will have to be for a future trip!
