I read that it is sometimes possible to arrange to ride in front with the driver on the historic train to Schynige Platte. How would I go about arranging this and would a 12 year old be eligible?

You can do that for a fee but I'm not sure if it's still possible to do it. For clarification you should contact the Schynige Platte operator directly.
You can get a driver's view or a front seat view without paying extra by sitting in the front coach directly behind the driver. To do this you probably need to be in the queue as early as possible.
