We have decided we would like to visit the St Gallen Christmas market in early December. Can anyone please provide me with the exact address for the St. Gallen Christmas market. I am trying to find a hotel near by. Some sites say it is at the St Gallen markplatz and others say Klosterplatz. Thank you

Actually there are two Christmas markets. The main one runs from 30 November until 23 December, and is located at the Marktplatz.

The second one (called the Christkindlimarkt) just runs on Sat 2 December and Sat 9 December at the Gallusplatz, which is adjacent to the Kloster.

Ah, that explains it. Thank you so much. St Gallen is having a big convention for our dates (Dec 4-6) so rooms are turning out to be difficult to find, but I will persevere:)

You wouldn’t necessarily have to stay in St Gallen. St Gallen is well-connected by train to Zürich (for example) until close to midnight – and the Christmas Market closes between 6pm and 9pm, depending on the day.

Indeed most hotels are booked out, but I found two options:

• The Sporting Hotel in a suburb of St. Gallen, which is a few minutes on foot from the train stop St. Gallen Haggen. From there it’s a 4 minute train ride to the center of town, and another few minutes on foot to the Marktplatz. Please see http://www.hotelscombined.com /Hotel/Sporting_Hotel_ St_Gallen.htm.
• The Alpenheim in nearby Teufen. At walking distance from the local train stop Teufen. It’s 20 minutes by train to St. Gallen. Please see http://www.hotelscombined.com /Hotel/Alpenheim_Teufe n.htm.
