Hi KcuBe and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Can you give us an idea of where in the Swiss Alps you will be? There are a lot of mountains and a lot of cable cars around – it’d be great if you can narrow down the region or if you know the mountains you are planning to visit?

    >> I’m planning a trip to Swiss Alps in Oct – Nov 18 period. I would like to know when are the maintenance periods for the Cable Cars & Cogwheels.

Broadly speaking, the maintenance periods are in May and November each year, but dates vary from place to place, and some services will also be affected in the second half of April, first half of June, second half of September, October, and first half of December. Maintenance periods tend to last between 4-6 weeks.

Some services also close for the winter. In 2018, the last day of operation for many of these services will be 21 October, especially in the Jungfrau Region. They start operations again in May or June the following year.

To try to assist you in making the most of your time in Switzerland, we really need to know your exact travel dates, where you intend to stay, and what mountain excursions you hope to do.

Some services, such as the train to the Jungfraujoch, operate year round.

I’m looking to travel from 1st November to 10th, landing at Zurich first, and planning to visit Lucerne, Junfrau & Bern.

The main highlight for my trip would be the scenery, i don’t really have any idea on the exact mountains that i would be visiting yet. Perhaps you could give some recommendation?

Would it be a better option to take a road trip instead?

    Hi KcuBe,

November is not the ideal time for mountain visits or car-trips unfortunately.

In the Lucerne area you can go up Mt. Pilatus (on the cogwheel train from Alpnachstad); Titlis is closed from Nov. 5-16 as is the cable car from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad.

Jungfraujoch is fully operating and Schilthorn is open as well at that time.

Could you advise an ideal date in October? My schedule is flexible at this point in time.

    Thanks

You will have many more options for mountain excursions if you start your trip early enough to finish by 21 October 2018 at the latest.
