Swiss Travel Pass tickets and Golden Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Ghandr is planning a 3-day trip in July using the Swiss Travel Pass. They want to know if the pass covers all train rides, especially the Golden Pass scenic train from Lucerne to Montreux, and how to reserve a seat on the trains.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass allows for mostly ticketless travel, but some mountain excursions are discounted rather than fully covered.
  • Reservations are only needed for panoramic trains like the Golden Pass, while regular trains do not require them.
  • For the Golden Pass, it is free with the Swiss Travel Pass, but seat reservations are recommended for the Zweisimmen to Montreux leg.

Hi all, I got a Swiss pass for 3 days in coming July and I would like to confirm if I have to buy ticket for any train during these 3 days? Or it’s all free with Swiss pass? and how can I reserve a seat in any train?.

and for golden pass panoramic scenic train from Lucerne to Montreaux, is it free also with Swiss pass? If not how can I use Swiss pass when I am purchasing ticket for the golden scenic train online to get Swiss pass discount and reserve a seat?

    thanks a lot

Hi Ghandr and welcome to MySwissAlps!

The Swiss Travel Pass has the widest coverage of all passes in Switzerland, and effectively means ticketless travel. However there are some journeys (e.g. cable cars to mountain tops) which are discounted rather than fully covered. For these you will need to arrange tickets.

You will see the details of what is covered on the validity map here as well as discounted mountain top excursions: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity

You do not need reservations except on the Panoramic trains (note there are regular trains as well on the same routes) as you can read about here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/reservations

The Golden Pass is free with the Swiss Travel Pass, reservations are not needed but recommended on the Zweisimmen to Montreux leg as you can read about here: http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass/gettingthere

Hope this answers your questions and have a wonderful trip!

    Maria.
