I am planning to take the Bernina express from St MOritz to Tirano. Is it necessary to take a rail pass?

You don't need a Swiss rail pass if you aren't planning on buying one for your trip.
You could just buy a point to point ticket for the train.

Either way you must make a seat reservation on the Bernina Express train.
